Avenue/MPD24 Question

I am using Avenue with an Akai MPD24, using the pads as effects triggers. When I used Modul8 for the same purpose, the effects responded to the pressure applied to each pad, allowing me to slowly add more and more of the desired effect without tapping the pads at different velocities. I can not seem to recreate this in Avenue, and after a few weeks of practicing with the demo, I'm not sure the the benefits outweigh the costs. Is there actually a way to get Avenue to respond to pressure sensitivity?

Lets say I do as you say and assign a button to opacity, it will respond to how hard I tap (velocity) but not how hard or soft, or soft to hard, vice versa (pressure sensitive). In Modul8 you can gently press a button and gradually push harder and the knob/slider/what-have-you responds in kind. The one thing I am doing is that I am assigning the effects to my dashboard first, could that be why? Can anyone that works for Resolume speak to whether or not Avenue can respond to pressure, rather than velocity?

just a question Hey!Cliché! , when you press on the MPD24 drum pad, it is constantly sending a midi signal of the pressure on the pad in form of note velocity or as controller/slider info aka midi CC? The way I understand what you are describing is that the drum pad is constantly sending a pressure signal like a slider CC midi control. so if you press harder it would be similar to moving a slider up.

But I wonder if the MPD24 is actually sending a musical note with velocity info instead of a continuous controller or CC command that you would usally have assigned to a slider.

My novation sl 25 MKII sends 1/4 notes each time I hit the drum pad, never tried to hold it down for constant signal. but I could test it to see what happens.

one thing would be to try using a program like midi monitor (for mac) or whatever pc equivalent to see what type of midi signal is coming from the MPD24. Maybe that will help. Some parameters in resolume respond best to note signals, other to midi cc. I assume the dashboard controls in resolume responds best to midi cc info and not midi notes like ones that might come from a drum pad. just currious what you MPD24 is sending.

another reason why it may not work if the MPD24 is sending midi note info is that resolume might not espond to after touch data. aftertouch is midi note pressure data after the note has been press, but before it has been released.

I believe it's probably sending notes and velocity data. The note triggers the effect and the velocity is the depth or some other parameter.

Does the Akai come with any MIDI mapping software, or is there any aftermarket software that can allow you to change the function of the pads?

It seems the MPD's pads cannot generically transmit CCs instead of note info. The MPD is sending note on/off to trigger the visuals, and aftertouch info the harder you press. Modul8 is responding to aftertouch.

I've not tried mapping Avenue's opacity to aftertouch, but if it can be done, that will solve your problem!

If not, don't worry - Bome's MIDI Translator pro can easily convert aftertouch info to continuous controllers, which will work perfectly in Avenue.
