Hi!

I've been VJing for a few years, mostly using SVCDs and traditional video mixers. About a year ago I was introduced to Resolume and other VJ software and started experimenting with them.

Now I'm looking for a suitable laptop for video mixing work. I can't keep borrowing my friend's new laptop forever every time I have a gig... :)

I'm attracted by the HP Compaq NX7000 (X1000 in the US), mostly because of the large (WSXGA+) and bright screen. Beside video mixing, I'd also like to use the laptop for some graphic design while I'm too lazy to sit in front of my desktop system. Hence the need for a large high-quality display.

But... I'm a bit worried if this machine is powerful enough for multi-layered mixing. On my home desktop (P4 2.4GHz, Radeon 9700, 5200RPM HD) I can easily mix 3 layers of 400x300 video with multiple effects. My friend's laptop (P4 2.66GHz, Radeon 9000, 4200RPM HD) also seems to cope with this. But how about the NX7000?

The NX7000 has a 1.5GHz Pentium M (Centrino) CPU, 512MB RAM, Radeon 9200 graphics chip and a 4200RPM hard drive.

Of course, with the same amount of money I could get one of those larger/heavier/noisier laptops with 3GHz desktop P4 CPUs...

Anyone having experience with Centrino laptops and multi-layered mixing? Would the performance be notably poorer when compared to, say, a 3GHz P4 CPU, given that the hard drive and graphics chip would remain the same?

Thanks for info,
Nuutti

i've got a 1.6GHz Pentium M with 800mb ram, radeon 9000, with an external harddrive and have no problems mixing 3 layers with effects.

But the external HD is essential, as otherwise there will be a latency problem when triggering your clips as this will be your main bottleneck.

email me if you need more details
