This Macbook OK for VJing?

Post by marcoantonio »

Hello!
I'm kinda new to VJing - and about to buy a Macbook Pro for Avenue.
Reading the forums seems like they're pretty much OK - but just to make sure and not buy something i'll regret later (specially when it comes to video cards - I'm still a newbie at that)... I thought I'd ask for consensus?

Should I buy this one? There's a few there, not sure which one either - are they all good?

Range of available Macs:

A review I found about them:

Sorry for asking so much, just.. it's a big financial commitment and I don't wanna stuff it up! All comments are welcome :D

Yeah i'd say you'd want to start with the mbp 15'4" with this you will have an adequate video card and fast enough processor. i have the 15.4" i7 with a 7200rpm hdd. this is more than enough and if i want i'll be able to do shows using the matrox triple head to go!

I would stay a way from the 13" mbp as i hear it has a integrated video card and you need one that is independent.

you'll also need a scan converter but its worth it getting a mac!!! first one ive ever had and its so good! :D

Thank you! -

Er... what's a 'scan converter'?
Is is something to use only if I want to connect to a TV?
Or do I also need it if i'm connecting to a projector?
Or is it simply good to have around *just in case*?

Thanks!! :)

ah sorry i didnt explain. with the new mbp depending on the what you are vjing out to (output) and what connection you need you may need a scan converter. say for example you have a projector and need to output s-video the mbp doesnt let you do this until you convert the signal! hope this makes sense :D

Got it! Thanks!!
I've got a gig next Thursday, so as you can imagine, i'm a bit jumpy about the whole thing and don't want to leave anything till the last minute...

(I had a Toshiba laptop that I used, but it finally died beyond repair. Time for a new laptop)

Thx!!
