Inconsistent DXV performance

Post by Agent Orange »

Once I heard about resolume and DXV one of the first things I did was grab some 1080p footage, re-encode as DXV, and see what it would behave like on my Macbook Pro. I was really excited when I could actually mix up to 4 layers of HD with about 25 fps.

So now I'm working on a project, and I've received all the footage, which I asked to be encoded as DXV, 720p and It's giving me terrible framerates. I'm dropping down below 10fps with only 2 layers...

The files aren't too large, some as small as 32mb, but they have alpha channels, could that affect performance?

I need to get this sorted for next week, so any suggestions would be appreciated.

Can you send us one of the clips? support at resolume dot com, if it's too large, WeTransfer.com rocks!

Strange. Just did another quick test, and it seems I can now get 3 layers playing with this footage at reasonable (25-30) fps.

I tried restarting my machine before, and I'm pretty sure we turned off all the effects as well...

Are effects at opacity 0 or bypassed still processed at all?
Also, would having a layer mask as well as composition mask affect playback speed? I did notice that moving masks degrades playback very quickly...

Is there anything else I should know that could potentially make a large impact on fps, outside of hardware, which hasn't changed?

as far as i know layers and effects at 0% opacity are not processed....
i recognized that the interface is grabbing a litte bit of performance if you see animated parameters down there... hide them and you have some more frames ;)
alpha dxv files also play slower (also file size is bigger normally)... so if you don't need alpha channel, recode the files to non alpha...
