System Memory or Video Memory Limitation with Comp size?

Post by gregsully »

I've been growing my comps bigger and bigger of late and finally have started to hit a limit where when reloading the crashes the system. Generally when i look at windows task manager, it happens around when resume gets to 1.2G+ of memory used. Its not an exact science and I'm still trying to figure it out..

My question is; is this a system memory or a graphics memory issue as it loads multiple clips. I have 4gb of system memory and a 5870 with 2gb of video ram. Will bumping my system up to 16gb make the difference in loading bigger comps? Or will i still experience the same limitation?

Anyone have experience or opinion on this?

Hello gregsully,

I do not exactly know where the bottleneck is, but I can tell u that my max. ammount of clips with a high performance system I have added was 1442 Clips.
Only one more clip crashed the system.

System:
CPUs: Dual CPU Quadcore-Xeon
Grafic: FirePro 8800 2GB
Drive: Vertex 2 SSD
RAM: 16GB

I don't have my system in front of me but I can say that my max comps were many less clips than than yours Cosmowe.. A few hundred vs 1000. While possibly its a mac vs PC thing (win 7 64bit), If you are running 16gb of RAM vs my 4gb and can load that many clips I think its safe to say that RAM makes a big difference.

Also note that I seem to have a bigger problem with a large comp that is not the main comp and Resolume crashes when trying to switch to it. I sometimes get around this by switching to a blank comp then the larger one.

I'd love to hear other peoples stories, but I'm going to make an early guess that system ram will allow for a much bigger comp.

some time ago i asked if more system ram would improve Avenue performance.

VJair .. Your right, RAM won't gain performance. But my theory is that it will allow you to load a larger comp without crashing..

maybe someone can test it...
if anyone has a project with maximum clips for his system, then drop out some ram and try again ;)

if i got the time i'll test it on my 8gb system with m poor radeon 4350 and massive 6hdd-raid0/system ssd...

I'm running a 3840x480 comp going out to 6 projectors, I have found that 98clips in a deck is my tipping point, anything over that and it's crashy time.

dRead....
That's another question.. Does comp size affect number of clips? Whats your computer specs?
