External MIDI tick + BPM Sync Clips

Post by Zuzanna »

Hi there,

Well I'm considering to buy Resolume Avenue, but honestly I'm not a VJ and I'm not going to use it in commercial - just as a demo for my project. What I really need is automatic playing clips from a playlist synched to the MIDI clock...

So.. I have tried both Resolume 3 and Resolume 4 Beta 1... and:
1) Autopilot in R4 seems to do not have support for I think necessary option "Auto Cruise" mode - I mean playing Column by Column like a playlist where length could be specified in number of beats/ticks
So in this case additional software for auto-triggering is still needed

2) Now it's important thing... maybe I'm wrong, but I have done some research on a forum and I didn't find an answer...
I have tried to synchronize BPM Sync clips to the MIDI Clock from external. Unfortunatelly when I've set BPM Sync on a Clip and then I have enabled MIDI Clock from external source, the clips didn't start playing... only yellow bar (step/tick/beat count bar) on a clip has been displayed.
But when I have disabled MIDI Clock, then clips are played... As mentioned, I was looking for an answer on the forum and only what I found that was some stupid answers like a "check your soundcard settings" - what the hell have soundcard output/input to external MIDI Clock and BPM Synced clips.

I can't believe that so powerful software cannot play clips synchronized to the MIDI Clock.

3) Can't find OSC command like this:
/this/effect3/...
there are only "activeclip" or hardcoded layer and clip number to manage settings inside of the clip ...
but let's say I have start 3 clips from new column (layer1, 2, 3), and I'm using on all these clips "IRC OSCSA 4" plugin to manage settings inside of each it and have specified OSC commands in this way:
/layer2/clip21/effect... (so I cannot use activeclip where I have started 3 clips in sametime, because only on a active one settings will apply) so i need to hardcode layer and clip number
In this case I cannot use Copy clip feature to duplicate it, because OSC command will work on previously specified clip until I'll change hardcoded layer and clip no.
So it's hard to build a playlist, where on each clip I'm using some external controls...
OSC Command %this% shouldbe added right away.

Please let me know if this what I'm talking about is true or not...

BTW:
4) Not sure why, but FFT Input seems to be not working in a R4 Beta1.
5) I found old link to the FF pluging pack http://www.resolume.com/download/resffp ... 2-2005.zip
I'm interested in ZX80 and Ascii Art plugin - seems to be not supported anymore in R3 and R4... Why?

Thank you for answers.
Bye

Hey Zuzanna,

I can't anwer all of your questions....but here is one answer.
This powerful software CAN play clips sync to a external midiclock.... I do that every weekend ;)
I'm using a KaossPad3 wired via usb to send a midiclock into Resolume.

- Start your external midiclock software/hardware
- Start Resolume
- Goto Resolume Preferences -> Midi
- Aktivate the external midiclock-input of your Soft/Hardware
- Close preferences, and make shure that the Resolume "BPM display" shows your BPM u are sending.

Image

- Make shure that the "MIDIclock In" indicator blinks your beat.
- Make shure that u see the "Beatposition" runs too.
- Add a Clip to your deck and set it to BPM Sync...by default it set to a 4 Beat lenght.
- Click on your clip... you should see a bar wich counts some beats down before the clip starts
that is because the clip is set to beatsnap by default, you can deaktivate beatsnap in the clip properties so your clip can start immediately...to stay 100% in sync with deactivated beatsnap you have to press the RESYNC button or you must have a good clock feeling when you trigger the clip :-)
"check your soundcard settings"
8-) just do it! 8-)

On my PC it runs perfect in sync with these settings:
DEVICE: Primary Sounddriver
SAMPLE RATE: 48.000
BUFFER SIZE: 1024

Thank you for answer! When I activate MIDI Clock, then on the MIDI bar, I see ticks indicator blinking and I see also current input BPM value... So Avenue gets ticks from external MIDI source.

But all clips with BPM Sync set, DO NOT launch - yellow bar seems to do not countdown, it just stay on a full length.

It's funny, because I have loaded demo composition from R3 where everything works, until I enable MIDI Clock in R3 Preferences... It stop working. Clips does not play anymore. When I'll turn it off, clips starts playing.

So, I really wonder what is the problem...

When the yellow bar stays on the clip it's something with your audio device... (maybe your audio driver is not supporting MIDI that well)

"check your soundcard settings !" Just do it ! ;-)

Select a different audio playback device in preferences/audio menu. For me ASIO4ALL works perfect.
desktop: Windows 7 home premium 64 bit, MSI 870A-G54, AMD Phenom II X4 955 Black Edition, 4Gb RAM (GVP34GB1600C9DC), NVidia GTX 560
laptop: Windows 7 home premium 32 bit, Core2duo 2Ghz, 4Gb Ram, NVidia 9600m GT

the usual cure for this fault is to make sure the soundcard is enabled in avenue preferences

*slow on the reply - beaten to it*

Tried on:
- Sound Blaster X-Fi XtremeMusic
- Allen and Heath XONE:4D
- Native Instruments AudioDJ 8

And frankly speaking, MIDI has nothing to do with "sound" (Soundcard) - it's independent. I think they have bad code.

question 5) the FF pack you linked to is the original type of freeframe - this is no longer supported in res 3 / 4 - they both now use ffgl which are graphics card accelerated freeframe effects.

+1 for %this% :D

+1 for "why is it that Avenue needs a sound card". I'd really like to understand this on a more technical basis :geek:

question 4) fft deffo works for me ( had to find a cable to confirm it ).... takes us back to the "check your soundcard settings" as mentioned for the bpm sync question
