ProTools, MBox2, DXV Codec and Resolume...

Post by (Pooch) »

Hello All:

Total noob here - just spent the last couple of weeks reading the manual and going through the software feature-by-feature. I love it - very impressive - but my workflow is a bit unorthodox and I need to understand a bit more. Here is the setup:

I have a Mac Mini, with an MBox2. I use ProTools as my DAW, and I have a MIDI keyboard and MIDI drum set that flow through the MBox2 into the Mac Mini (instruments into MBox2 via MIDI, MBox2 into Mac Mini via USB).

My video and audio content is coming from a short film I produced and my cinematographer is trying to output the video to me in a way that is optimized as per the manual. Assuming I am able to create these small video clips by the preferred method - marrying the DXV video output and the audio within Resolume - how does Resolume interact with ProTools? Say, for example, that I want to create a composition where I play my drum set and assign a clip to each of the MIDI notes. I have already done this successfully within Resolume using the MIDI Application Mapping function, but I also want those notes to be recorded by ProTools. Later, when I play back the ProTools composition I want the Resolume clips to be triggered.

This is a long way of saying - is Resolume an RTAS plug-in? Because if it was I could use it like any other sampler, just inserting it on a track and triggering it while recording those notes in ProTools, then triggering them again during a ProTools playback. As of right now, I see no other way for both programs to work together other than opening both and praying.

I found out about Resolume from this article:

http://webonanza.com/vj-apps-roundup-or ... ike-audio/

He says "I had no problem linking the software to my DAW (Ableton Live)" and we exchanged e-mails, with him recommending I reach out to you guys regarding ProTools.

Any thoughts would be much appreciated.

Cheers,

Pooch

Hello All:

No response on this? I know everyone is busy but I believe I am asking something pretty straightforward. Perfectly willing to buy this software if I can use it for my purposes but as of now - no sale.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Cheers,

Resolume is a stand alone application, so it will not function as a RTAS plugin.

The usual method of syncing two applications via midi, is to send out midi signals from one app, and catching it with the other. This can be done for instance by sending midi to a virtual instrument, and then letting the other app (Resolume) listen to this instrument.

As you mention, Live is the most common used tool for this, but the workflow should be similar with ProTools. For sending out midi from ProTools, it's best to check out the ProTools manual.

Hope that helps!
