Advanced Output UI Feedback + Wishlist

Post by jns »

Out of months of frustration of jumping between MadMapper and Resolume, and just wishing I could stick with one for the mapping, I am left without any choice but to go with MadMapper. And I have really tried, but there are too many things at the moment weird with the Advanced Output.

— Lock, i know it's been asked before, but it's so annoying when you try to select a shape but always end up selecting a shape beneath, especially when working with crops and slices.
— My god the Float on Top that I just can't turn off, why? Please make this a tickbox or something.
— When choosing the inputs for a slice, should not the names correspond to the layer names? I rename them often, and I have no idea what Layer6 means during a gig if I need to make changes.
— I've searched all around the forums, but I guess it is just impossible. When I do mapping shows, I almost never use multiple slices. I find that having content perfectly mapped to a shape destroys the whole reason of what's interesting visually. With slices, the visual output just acts as if it was a flat screen. But with multiple crops, with differently placed inputs, makes it a bit irregular and interesting. So, why can't crops be connected to a specific Slice?

An example (i have included an image). I have x amount of shapes, and i want to display different visuals on each. I can create individual slices for each which does the job, except, that I don't want it to slice and distort, I just want it to crop. Basically, the Slice would work exactly as I would wish if it also worked as a Crop. i.e. I create a slice, I can add points, and I can choose if it should crop the input, or slice it.

If this is in any way possible, please tell me how. Some of these I find to be not too weird of requests and something one could ask of a software of this level, and price.

— I would love to be able to select multiple slices and change all their input on the fly, or make adjustments to all of them. Advanced Output slows down the computer a bit, and so having to go in to each one during a gig is a terrible process.

— I saw some posts around this and the solutions feel a bit weird. I often need to do a show with 1 special layer shown somewhere. So let's say I have 2 slices, one with composition, and one with Layer5 for instance. If i suddenly want to show Layer5 individually, it will be shown in all the other slices too with Composition view. Another wishlist is of course to be able to exclude a layer from the composition..

Besides Advanced Output

— Modular windows, I often want more than 5 layers, and there's so much space left because i don't need to be able to see all the columns. Would it not be easier if the Clip Layers where detachable and I could move it around? The Resolume Workspace feels very cluttered.

— Mapping Keys, a huge need for me would be to be able to Save Mappings, and especially Reset Mappings.

Otherwise, thanks for a great Software! The reason I switched from Modul8 was because Modul8 really didn't feel reliable, and the way the UI manifested itself was very awkward and started to feel silly with all the custom modules. AutoPilot, all the affectors is great and makes planning shows much greater. But now I feel I've lost a bit of the spontanous feel of Modul8.

I don't really know what sort of reply you're looking for.

If you feel more comfortable with Resolume's GUI and think the mapping functions of MadMapper are better, you can simply Syphon out of Resolume Avenue into MM. We specifically implemented native Syphon support to allow users the most creative freedom in their workflow.

But maybe I'm misunderstanding the issue?

I don't know if I was looking for a reply, I have just worked a lot with Resolume the last couple of months and wanted to shout out some things that I think would completely remove modul8 from my mind. Because I can't help but to feel that there are some minor things that could be added in Resolume that would make it perfect, for me that is. Maybe they were not written in the best of ways, but for future editions of Resolume I hope they don't go completely unseen.

Squeezing it all through Syphon takes a lot of power on my poor macbook, and I just really love using 1 software as much as possible, one of the reasons I purchased Arena was for this reason, but now I feel that Arena doesn't really replace MadMapper as much as it could, and I feel slightly dumb for spending that money. The only thing that really makes the mapping stand out at the moment is the edge blending and the layer routing, which i love. But I don't understand why the rest of the issues I pointed out are not adressed. I don't see many people reacting to ít either, but it's like the only kind of mapping I do.

facebook.com/apm300/ for some examples of things I do where Resolume would have greatly helped if some things were adjusted.. For our last gig I used Madmapper so I could make individual crops for each shape or face. But would have loved to just be able to use Resolume..

Most of your feedback is actually already on our todo list. Slice specific crops is probably the thing you miss most? That is one of our main priorities for the Advanced Screen Setup, or ASS as we like to call it.

That's so great. Hopefully it will happen very soon. Mapping installations more and more get standard in clubs and on stage and it's very sad that Resolume is limitied in advanced mapping setups. Mapmapper users have definitely an advantage by now - but I have a PC so I'm dependent on it. So thumbs up - big news!
