Major problem!

Post by Trypta »

Were having a major problem with Resolume. It started after installing 4.1.4 and is now happening in 4.1.3 and 4.1.2. Were getting flickers of artifacts in the Resolume window worse when there is a heavier load on the GPU (more layers, higher resolution, DXV codec (rather than uncompressed)....)

We have our debut performance coming up in 4 weeks so if we can get this resolved asap were just going to have to drop Resolume.

I would do a complete uninstall and revert back to 4.1.3 (if it were to work for sure) but 4.1.3 was crashing when locked to midi sync.

Here are the system specs:
6 core I7 Windows machine with SSD drives
2 Quadro K5000s installed

I haven't used Resolume since February but I haven't done any driver updates or OS updates either so I'm not sure why this would be happening. I'm hoping there could be some sort fix I can do or implement soon because we really like Resolume as a server.

Here are some screen shots of the output of Resolume the artifacts are the blotchy squarish coloring. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
thanks
Keith

Okay so I've pretty found the problem and potential solutions. Basically it comes down to the DXV codec on Windows 7. I've tested this on two machines both 4.5 ghz Intel i7s one with 2 Nvidea Quadro K5000s and the other with two Quadro 5000s.

Basically when using DXV codec and playing 2 or more 60 fps 720p files the artifacts appear. This does not happen with .mov's with the following codecs animation, h.264, photo Jpeg, and mpeg4. I would prefer to use animation codec but I'm running out of disk space. All that being said Resolume's performance with any of these codecs is not very good. Here are some stats:

.mov h.264 codec.
- 1 clip 57 fps
- 2 clips 48 fps
- 3 clips 41 fps
(DXV is getting about the same performance as h.264)

.mov photoJpeg
- 1 clip 45 fps
- 2 clips 38 fps
- 3 clips 30 fps

Even animation codec with 1 clip playing is getting less than 60 fps. BTW all this is running on a Raid 0 SSD array clocking at about 1000 MB/s (bytes not bits).

Just for a comparison I dropped the same clips into Touch Designer and running in edit mode (slower than performance mode) I've got 10 clips (60 fps 720p .mov -h.264) playing at the same time and I'm getting a solid 60 fps (sometime jumping up to 120 fps in perform mode). I maxed my drive after 13 clips when the frame rate then dropped.

I'm sorry I really wanted to use Resolume as a video server running into Touch (because of its easy to use streamlied drag and drop and mix interface) but I just can't play back this content at less than 60 fps. If or when Resolume's performance increases with Quadro cards and or Windows I would really be happy to use it.

If anyone has any thoughts or ideas I would be happy to hear them.

thanks
Keith

thats weird, i always have ridiculously high fps and my computer specs are way lower than yours. i also have never experienced any serious or catastrophic issues what so ever. i have a dual core machine with an hd 7770 and clips running off an OCZ Vertex 3. i use mostly 720p and up files, maybe 150 clips in a session.

I know it doesn't make much sense. I think it is because of the Quadro GPUs, there might be some particular calls needed to use them properly?

The Resolume guys are on it they contacted me right away so I'm hopeful we'll find a solution. I was actually really impressed on how fast I got a response back from my email. Cheers to Joris and all the people working on this great piece of software.

cheers

Keep me updated on the details Trypta. That Quadro 5000 I got from you is on a fairly light video tour but i'll have it back on monday. I'll do some stress testing and see if the 5000 and k5000 have the same bug. When a solution comes about give me a shout on facebook.
