New laptop

No , actually i abuse them for many years ( till they survive actually ) and then i move to something new .
My problem is i am kind of retired VJ now ( wierd huh ) and i want to go back to the scene. I spent the last year rebuilding my video gallery with current resolutions and styles and i feel that the technology is not ready for this.
It looks like to output 5760x1080 is a challenge even now. Most of the equipment needed for Vj-ing i have only thing i dont have is a laptop capable of something like this - yes even if it plays 1 layer at a time it will do. I dont want to lug around my Desktop machine as it is really heavy. So far i am working mostly on corporate events where the content is simple but the screens have to be interesting thus i need higher resolutions now.


Anyone with advice is welcome as i am in a hurry . in 2 weeks ( 27th of may ) i am going to croatia for 2 week event and i`d prefer to take 2 laptops with me instead of 2 20kg machines and the supporting peripherals for them.

erm i cant try as i haven't bought the laptop yet .

Dont want to buy another Matrox because i have used DP Edition and its only problems there.

I am asking if someone have this kind of machine and if he tested on High res so i have some real world opinion of it . Its not cheap you know, if it was 500euro laptop OK but this is more than 1000 and one does not simply buy it before knowing if it can do the job.

Hi bro, i use a N53sv from ASUS with 7200rpm hdd and Nvidia gt540m 1 gb, 12 gb ram, i have a th2go digital edition and works fine in high resolutions, with a 3.0 usb port too that im planning to use with a blackmagic intensity shuttle, well i think ASUS has really decent machines and well build they are the manufacturers for Apple motherboards so...i have 2 years this summer with that machine and no complains at all its already tamed with the right codecs and softwares you'll do it just fine, for sure i will buy another ASUS machine i would go for this http://www.asus.com/Notebooks_Ultrabooks/N56VB/

Having a single 7200 rpm traditional drive is likely not going to have smooth transitions between clips at 5760x1080. I use an asus 75vw and if you replace the blue ray drive you can add a 3rd hard drive. With a nv 670m and a pair of ssds in raid 0 you should be able to handle this at 60fps long as you don't swap decks live. Raid 0 does pose potential touring problems if one drive goes down, i know some people who devote a single layer or mix clips between two ssds.

Thats the plan : 1 120GB SSD as a system drive and 2x 256GB SSD @ RAID 0 for content .
Also want to use BMD Intensity shuttle on USB port for camera/second computer .
Regarding the content i realize in this resolution the amount of layers in use should be very low, and actually i am not planning to mix in these resolutions ( i may use footage in the same aspect though but a bit smaller ) , they are for special cases where i need really high res ( pre rendered movie for example ). Also with the option to stream VVVV in to Resolume i see a chanse to go back to the more generative visuals.

About the RAID , yes you are right it is always a risk , but i always have my normal HDDs with me as backup for all the footage and materials i may need for a show. Also i was thinking about buying 3th SSD for that exact reason .

So yeah mostly my question was if anyone have this computer and have tested TH2Go in so high res and if the machine is reliable. As i said i dont really need to use content at this res but i may need to output it ( for some projectors from Barco and DigitalProjection )
the problem with some of them is that unless you use their native resolution but something smaller , the projected image is smaller due to them using only part of the matrix ... stupid complicated stuff

Hi there everyone.

I was going to start a new topic about this but since yours is so fresh and deals with almost the same problem I ask your permission to join the talk.

I'm considering buying a new laptop since lately my 2011 model MBP has been giving me more headaches than help. And I'm totally fed up with the OS and the hype behind the brand. I've always used PCs and bought a mac because for the time it was the best investment in my country comparing prices VS performance. And indeed it worked for a while. But now it's getting on my nerves. Even using bootcamp most of the time. Well...enough ranting. hehehe

Since this time I have ways to buy the thing abroad and not pay the ridiculous useless taxes of 70% over the price when it arrives here I can pick an affordable yet powerfull enough machine.

In my initial search I came across this lovely boy here.

It's not the most powerful machine around but the processing power and the dedicated video card caught my attention. Put a price around US$ 1000,00 and they got my attention.

Off course I'll add the 16 GB RAM and an SSD card as soon as I take it out of the box.

My main concerns are:

- the hybrid video card situation - it swaps between the on board and the dedicated card automatically. Is it going to be an issue with resolume or even a tripplehead?

- the display port: can I use the same adapter I used on my mac? It looks the same. Any issues with that?

- I've read some good feedback about using resolume with win8 but I must ask anyway: any known issues? Will I be better off using win7?


Guess that's it. I'm quite low on how much I can spend and I intent to sell my macbook over here for a good price (this time the hype will actually help!) to cover part of the costs. And given how fast things are going in the world of video technology I don't want to blow my wallet over something that will be useless in some months.

Besides I've been doing more theater scenarios than actual club VJing so things go on a much lighter pace.

Anyway if anyone cares to read it thanks a lot! And to anyone who spares the time to shine some light on the matter thanks in double.

I have a dell precision m6700 with a quadro 5000 card, 32 gigs of ram and two 512 ssd drives... i could put two more ssd's in there (one flash ssd) if I wanted

there is a pcie cardslot that is connected to a magma pcie enclosure that handles high end peripherals...

it is most def NOT made of plastic... it is aluminum... there is one pop out drive for easy swapping/security

all components are easily accessible for repair/upgrades...

insane next day service warrantee no questions asked and extra support when needed.

makes my origin feel like a toy

all other pc's i own/have owned pale in comparison...

sometimes its good to go big


granted this fucking thing cost like almost 7k and makes me look like a fucking asshole going through security everytime

Indeed if you wanna go Dell you absolutely have to go big. I do believe they still make some great machines.

A company can't simply became trash out of the blue. But as you said you must be ready to spend. The main stream market Dells are definitely rubish.

I mistakenly advised my brother to buy one as I had the old Dells in mind. After 3 months the pad no longer worked. At all. And in less than an year the thing barely turned on. With fresh installs and all.

That´s why I´m so concerned and trying to learn as much as possible before taking the leap. The laptop I bought before my mac was an HP that was barely used given it was beyond horrible. Yep...I bought it without the necessary research.

If I had the clams I´d definitely go over the top. But my hands are tied.

Well...seems like I'm gonna be finding out soon if this ASUS N550JV-DB72T laptop is any good. Just ordered.

If anyone is interested I can share my opinion in a few days.
