Does it carry special requirements for the hardware being used?

I'm using a Lenovo Windows 8 laptop. To attempt the preview option, i attach a cheap usb sound card - that allows me to do the very same thing I'm attempting to do, with other applications. Eg. I can send WMP audio to only the usb device and youtube videos playing in chrome to the internal speakers.

When I however go to Arena to do the same thing, i'm not given the option to select the usb device as preview. I can however select it to be primary device. So nothing is wrong with the hardware.

Most applications, including Resolume, can only access a single audio output. This is why you are able to play your WMAs via WinAmp on one output and your videos via Chrome on another.

Resolume is a single app, so your preview output has to be another channel on the same device as your main output channel. Theoretically, you should be able to preview out on a single device while the main output is set to none, but this kind of defeats the purpose in most cases.

Point taken, so then how do i "preview audio" - of course running Arena from the laptop?

also i don't think the purpose would be defeated, i don't think you are understanding me 100%.

Lets use a scenario: Composition is setup and running, there was a last minute change to one of the videos to be played - how can i preview (audio) without sending it to program. I thought there was a way to keep the main audio output set to the built-in sound card and then set the preview audio out to the usb sound card

You need an audio device with multiple channels. For instance the NI Audio Kontrol 1 should be dirt cheap on eBay.

I think I understood you in this case. That's exactly why it defeats the purpose. A 'second' audio device can only be used for the preview if there is no 'first' device selected for the main output. Which defeats the purpose of having the second audio device there, because there is no main output to send it to after you checked it.
