What material do you use for projection?

Hello, I use resolume for projection mapping and recently there has been an increase in requests for projection mapping at parties, raves, events etc...

What materials do you use to make geometric shapes fit for projection mapping? I'm looking to make a bunch of solid white clean boxes, triangles, any sort of cool surface!

Styrofoam? Bristle Board? What looks the cleanest, is affordable and not too hard to work with.

For a project I did earlier I used cardboard boxes wrapped in white paper but I didn't like the visible seams. I'd much prefer something nice and smooth that is white, any suggestions? Experiences?

MDF cut and assembled by a pro and kills white paint does the trick for me... bigger money projects you can have someone take your specs and go at it with a router for perfect cuts... triangle shapes have always been difficult for me personally and I find it better to hire or collab with someone who fabricates for a living... the illusion is ruined with even the slightest seam visible for me... dust on the paint... all that makes me crazy

I made this stage for a mate when I had some time off. It cost around 500 bucks and is all MDF board... cut and then plastered and sanded. then painted once and sanded... then again... then again...

all the paint was sprayed on in a paint room and allowed double the reccommended drying time... then we bolted on some castors and shippped it off...

ran the show with resolume on a mac book pro with syphon into madmapper... much of the content was made in C4D and then sliced up in after effects for perspective illusions... kinda like the ghetto way to do 3D mapping

ran it 3 times... pretty fun break from the hustle and bustle of the corporate stuff

Thats far out! I live two blocks away, and I have done a a whole lot of gigs there, my homies who I assist with projections aren't big spenders, so I only ever use my 7 and 4k's there, VER rental prices make it pretty much impossible for me to make a profit off renting barcos and doing their events... But I hope to make it happen at some point

Coroplast is good material but it does dent pretty easy if your stage hands are rough on equipment. The good news is that the material is cheap, doesnt require painting, cleans easily, is very lightweight, and my local sign shop will cnc cut an 8'x4' piece for 15-20usd.

We have a DJ booth that travels in four pieces. We use white gaff to cover the seems. If you're looking carefully up close you can see it but past 10 feet its invisible.

I had the opportunity to see Amon Tobin's setup up close. It's 1/4" painted wood on a welded steel frame. The crew working the show said it was heavy as hell. The entire system is driven by Touch Designer and powered by two 20k beamers. They have two more 20k's stacked underneath as backups. The entire stage set was filthy but with 40k lumens, you couldnt tell.
