Quick & Dirty for a beginner?

I am basically looking for software which will allow me to put bunch of video clips (without audio streams) together in a couple of layers and mix them together in an automated way, whilst synchronised to an external audio input.

In essence, a replacement for Milkdrop with but with my own video clips.

Now, I realise that Resolume is aimed at doing much, much more than that. I also realise that many VJs will say they don't support "click and forget" techniques for various reasons (I suppose that's a bit like the debate about the only "proper" method of DJing being using vinyl and 1210s).

Nevertheless, that is my current need and it is what I am interested in this software for at the moment. My question is ... can Resolume achieve it? If not, is anyone able to recommend something which can (I would not ordinarily ask such a thing but my thinking is that if Resolume can't achieve this (or other software would do it much better) then such software is not really in competition with Resolume.

Thanks and don't shoot me down please ... I'm being honest about my needs and not wanting to degrade the art of VJing at all.

...hmm..it's more like a debate about hiring a DJ or just use an iPod shuffle!

But yes..Resolume can help you! Why don't you just download the full working Demo of Resolume and test it?

Yes, I have the demo but after playing around and reading the manual I can't seem to find a way to achieve this. I can see that external audio can make parameters move but I'm puzzled as to how this fits in with what I'm after

So then...give us a detailed explanation of what you want Resolume to do for you.

What I understand so far:
Couple of clips mixing randomly together.

What would you like the audio input take control of?
Would you like the clips changing on beat? Or would you like Resolume to generate video effects on your clips which are changing randomly?

Yes Resolume does this. You just need to experiment with the effects to get a decent look.

OK, I'd be very grateful if you could tell me how or give me a clue. As I say, I've read the manual and can't seem to fathom it.

hmm.. let me see if I can make it short and easy


- Open Resolume
- Create a new composition
- Drag'n drop two videoclips side by side on layer 1
- Drag'n drop the "cube tiles" video effect on layer 3
- Drag'n drop the "kaleidoscope" video effect on layer 3

- Activate layer one by clicking on it on the very left of the layer 1 row
- Goto the "Layer" tab right of the preview window and activate the "Autopilot" of layer 1 by clicking on the right arrows.
- Right-click on the clip name of your second clip inside the clipdeck and set the autopilot to "Play first clip"
- Click your first clip.

Now your layer 1 clips should run in a loop row. You can place as many clips between them as you like. Actually as many your computer can handle.

- Repeat the last procedure with layer 3 and the fx clips inside it

Now your two clips and the two video effects should loop inside your deck. The effects might look a bit static. You can animate them inside the respective clip properties. How you can do this?
