Frame rate loss

Post by rawdesigns »

So I'm running my HP laptop on Arena and every 5 min or so I'll get a good FPS at 50-60 and then it will drop down to 5 FPS for a few min then back up to 50-60 again.
Here's my laptops specs

HP ENVY 15t-3200
Intel i7-3720QM
AMD Radeon 7700m
16gb ram
250GB Samsung 840 pro SSD

All my clips are 720 DXV
I have effects but don't go crazy on them
Also my CPU utilization is only at about 15%

Could it be the amount of clips loaded on the comp?
I have a bunch of packs loaded in separate decks about 350 clips in total.

Thanks

hey Raw,
- are your frames even dropping when you only play one single clip in loop without effects?
- Is your system maybe doing some other crazy stuff beside Resolume?

I do not think that your 350 causes this. I'm using a quite similar notebook like you but uses almost twice as much clips in a comp.

have a look at the ssd utilization, i think Windows does something in the background.
virus scanner?
scheduled tasks?
run msconfig as administrator and switch off unnecessary startup programs.
also, check the power saving settings and battery management software settings for intelligent desktop charge mode.

Thanks for the quick replay guys!

So I updated all my drivers, disc clean and defraged my machine. I'm getting about 80 FPS now and it runs a lot smoother. BUT yet again the frame rate drops after about 5 min. you can see in the screen capture link that it runs smooth and then spikes and drops to 12% and thats when I lose FPS. I have no idea why this is happening. I may just a complete factory restore and start from scratch

from your screenshot it looks like that whatever is driving the cpu to 100% is driving the hdd100% too you should see the program in the process list.
find out path, force kill, then if not necessary for Windows ...delete.
I too would like to know what can drive an ssd to 100% in the background.
and look, the wifi utilization is at top too!

cloud service running? dropbox?

Usually it doesn't spike like that before losing frame rate, the CPU just kind of drops off then gets back to normal again.

:o I think I figured out the problem! :o

So I have an advance output on that comp and it contains a lot of masks and a couple slices. I opened a new comp with its advance output with only a couple masks and it works great i'm at a consistent 60 FPS and with 3 clips loaded about 35 FPS.

Could a more complex advance output slow down the system?

it could, but not in intervals of 5 min.
is your gpu overheating?
2mins of reduced power could cool it down.

Really does sound like a background task suddenly scanning your drive or memory. Notice that your wifi also seems to spike at the exact same moment.

Strange that the extra masks would be doing that. I've had over 30 slices and masks on a worse gpu then yours without that issue. Buuuuuuuut, when it comes to AMD i used to experience lots of weird stuff like this with a 7970.

Overheating could be it, I would get an app to monitor all your temperatures.

I'm curious about the heat factor. One of my servers started having problems around 60C/140F (motherboard temps). I've managed to get it down to 125F, but without liquid cooling the whole thing, there can't be much more improvement.

That's interesting, do you know what types of processes would be in use at that time? I tried to close everything down that I don't need. I find it strange that my other comp works just fine
