Unwanted banding

Hi all !

I produced a video which is a moving gradient. Fail, because in the export whatever quality i'm rendering, the banding appears.
Does anyone have a trick to get less banding in resolume ? Maybe a effect ?
Or did you ever found a good trick in After effects to get less ? Or a codec that does not have banding and still plays in resolume ?

Is the gradient an image or a DXV file?

Have you tried the built-in gradient function which you will find under [Sources] which can be animated to move using the [Slide] effect.

You can adjust the gradient's render width and/or height, all the color, position and movement parameters to suit your needs and you can fine tune it using other effects.

Hopefully this can work for you.

Hi thanks for the reply.

It's a animation out of after effects, which has different shadows etc. so only the gradient effect in rslm will not do, but, maybe a nice feature to play around in the future

So, it's a DXV video.

yeah it can be a good solution but I've never found it be 100% effective. DXV will leave some compression artefacts and this may be an issue too.

Have you re-rendered? If so how does it look? Could you upload a screenshot. I'm interested to see how it looks.

As oaktown mentioned you have the option of making a gradient in Resolume as well.

it is 8bit, so you will have banding with any codec. but indeed dxv makes banding issues in darker gradients even a bit worse. (that has been extensively discussed in various topics her ein the forums, i.e. viewtopic.php?f=6&t=9586)

you could try to a add a little bit of noise on top, it pretty much makes the banding disappear (also for h.264 for vimeo or other release formats this is a good strategy):

I got rid of almost all banding in the file, through adding a little noise and first making png files and than exporting to dxv and a little bit of magic.

But still you see some banding when projected, although not in resolume, only on the wall.
Guess that's a beamer issue right ?
Or maybe anyone has tips ? adding live grain ?

if it is only in the projection it might very well be the projector - after all it is signal chain of 8bit colour depths. unfortunately. meh :/
