SMPTE Explained?

Hi all,
I'm interested in how SMPTE works, and hope that someone could shed some light on it What I want to know is: Does smpte code have the ability to launch a specific clip in Resolume (Arena) ...Also, does each audio clip have to have its own smpte timecode file relative to it?
Is smpte "better" than a midi signal?

you can set Timecode Offset per Clip.
