External SSD via USB 3.0
External SSD via USB 3.0
I was wondering if a external SSD lets say 256GB via USB 3.0 is OK for mixing HD content? Does anyone have some experience or has used a setup like that.

I've done it once. My framerates dropped down pretty low but I'm assuming I was hitting the limits of my GPU.

Got it, will do some tests and order one. I did some tests with USB stick, has about 200Mb/sec read which is pretty good and 32GB. also with a SDXC card which is great too for lower size visuals 720p and such.

Re: External SSD via USB 3.0
I did some online research and came to the conclusion that class 10 cards are about the same speed as a 7.2k rpm drive.
Re: External SSD via USB 3.0
I use the SanDisk Extreme 64GB USB 3.0 Flash Drives (Read Up To 245MB/s; Write Up To 190MB/s). They are cheap and they work great!
They are so fast that I've forgotten to move the media to my main SSD before and ran multi-layered HD shows straight from the sticks!

Re: External SSD via USB 3.0
Let me correct my earlier post. That was performed using eSata.
I tried one of my USB 3.0 SSD drives with my late 2011 macbook pro. The MBP only has 2.0 but to my surprise it worked rather well. I have ran that same drive on USB 3.0 and it works great.

An SSD over USB3 works great. Done it with both a retina macbook pro and a year old Sager Laptop. Clip size is the limiting factor for how many you can play at once. I think I can do about 5-6 at 1080p before having issues.
