External USB Mic for very loud shows
External USB Mic for very loud shows
Resolume's gain control is good for loud shows, but i have another laptop that has some triggering visuals, I use the built in mic on the laptop, I set the recording level to the lowest possible level, but it is still peaking out. Anyone know of a cheap external usb mic with good gain control? Thanks.

on windows there is a mic level boost option in the config of the mic device.
maybe it is checked, so you it gives you a higher signal level.

It is possible but not all shows have the soundboard near the projector. That sure pre-amp looks interesting, but a little expensive.

Do you need a feed at the projector or second laptop?
Either way, it should be pretty easy to get a mono feed from the FOH mixer. Most venues have audio patch so it's unlikely you'd be more than 100' from one so carry a 100' balanced (TRS) 1/4" jack cable with you + a 1/4" to 1/8" adapter (assuming you've got a mic input on your laptop) and you should be ready for most situations but most venues should have that in their inventory.
You can always get a cheap audio to USB adapter: http://amzn.com/B001MSS6CS and just carry adapters from XLR or 1/4TRS to 1/8".

you surely have some old headphones lying around somewhere, try to plug them into the mic input, see how the signal level is.
if it gives you a too high input, try them in the line input, that should give 20 dB less signal.
