I have been trying demos of various VJ software over the last week and for me, Resolume comes out on top, I really like the interface and how it all works, I was just about to buy the software when I noticed something that I cannot seem to fix.
I am running it on a new Mac Pro desktop at the moment and I am working with full 1080p video files encoded in Apple Pro Res 422 no more than 30 seconds per clip. Iam getting 59- 60 fps which is great but even at this frame rate I am noticing slightly jerky playback no matter what mode iam in ( timeline, beat sync..etc). I've tried re encoding to Photo JPEG 75% and DXV but it's exactly the same. This is happening with just one clip in the project.
I know its not pushing the computer as I can open the movies in QuickTime and play them at the same time as Resolume (Avenue) is running and I get perfect smooth playback.
I have not noticed this jerky playback in any of the other VJ software I have tried recently like VDMX or Coge
Can someone tell me what iam doing wrong?
You can download a couple of the files I've been working with from here so you can see exactly what I mean if it helps.

Re: Resolume is great but...
Hey Peter,
that is a known issue. The guys of Resolume working hard on this for a while. You are not doing anything wrong.
Here you'll find the "smooth playback" thread

Thanks for the reply..
Ive just read through that 'smooth playback' thread, what concerns me is the posts are dated 2013, we are now in 2015 and it seems still no solution
Cheers

Re: Resolume is great but...
As far as I read correctly between the lines here in the forum it's not a trivial problem they have with the playback engine so it's not correctable with a couple lines of code.
Yes 2 years is long....but not too long I would say to build a almost entirely new playback engine which works with every feature of Resolume. And that is what they are doing....I guess.

Re: Resolume is great but...
I converted the video Darkstar-HD.mp4 (30 FPS) from one of your links to both ProRes 422 and DXV codecs and it plays fine in Resolume on my side on a MBP late 2013 (1TB SSD, 16GB RAM and NVIDIA GeForce GT 750M 2048 MB) so I'm wondering what makes it stutter on your end.
Can you double check to make sure your overall speed is set to 100%: viewtopic.php?f=12&t=11332&hilit=speed+speed#p45560

Re: Resolume is great but...
Thanks for your replies, I checked and the Global speed was correct.
Iam a little confused as cosmowe says it an ongoing Resolume problem that they are working on.
I copied what you did and downloaded the mp4 version of that Darkstar clip and converted it to Pro Res 422 and it still doesn't play back super smooth in Resolume, when i say jerky its only a small amount and its random but enough that I can notice it, its even worse when if send Resolume clock from Ableton Live.
My setup is:
Mac Pro 3.5 GHz 6-Core Intel Xeon E5
Yosemite 10.10.2
Memory: 64 GB 1866 MHz DDR3 ECC
Graphics: 2 x AMD FirePro D500 3072 MB running 2 x DELL U2713HM Displays running at 2560 x1440 at 60 Hertz
500 GB SSD
External 24 TB SAS Disk
Thanks

Re: Resolume is great but...
Nice set up!
A few questions:
Do you notice the stuttering even when you're not sending the output to monitor or projector?
Is your control monitor plugged into the same GPU as the other outputs?
Have you tested any other media? For instance, why don't you download and test the sample file that's available in the DXV page

Re: Resolume is great but...
Are your SAS drives SSD or HDD. What are the RPM of the SAS drives? If the SAS drive is where you are reading the file from, they putting it on the SSD and try again.
There have been tons of people that have problem with certain versions of the Catalyst drivers for the Radeon cards, so maybe try a different driver version

Thanks for the replies guys.
To answer your questions.
Yes I notice the stuttering when i disable the output
No my control monitor is not plugged into the same GPU as the output monitor
I have tested lots of different media in all different codecs and FPS and its happening on with all of them, what is the URL of the DXV page?
SAS drives are HDD 7200 but its happening when I use media on the SSD as well.
Doing more tests today, hopefully will find a solution.
Thanks
Peter

Re: Resolume is great but...
Hey Peter,
I've updated the Vimeo-Links here:
viewtopic.php?f=12&t=10089&hilit=smooth ... k&start=10
so you will have access to them again.
Would you mind to follow the download steps and display configurations I've recommended in this threat and tell me if the shown stutters are nearly the same you have?
I've figured out that talking about stuttering or un-smooth videos with more than one person is a bit fiddly. Most peoples have different opinions on what is smooth and what not. When I am walking threw a exhibition with a lot of company's which are using LED walls...projections..or TVs...nearly 90% presenting their stuff jerky and stuttering.
Best regards
cosmowe
