New Mac Pro FPS Problems

Post by benaguitar35 »

Hello, I've been using resolume for a few months now and I love it so much! But I am having a little bit of a problem with my FPS.

I'm running two 1280X720p outputs with one 1280x720p Monitor so three outputs total. My Fps sometimes is 60FPS but sometimes it goes down to 30 FPS randomly and affects my playback to be jerky. I know Resolume is a 32bit program and doesn't have support for dual graphics support.

Here are my Specs:
OSX 10.9.5
Quad Core XEON Processor
16GB Ram
Dual AMD Firepro D500 3GB Each so 6GB total
1TB Flash Storage

Any help or suggestions would be awesome!

That's weird, at 30fps, it shouldn't look jerky!

A few questions:
  • - Are all your output connected to the same GPU?
    - which version of Resolume are you running?
    - what type of projector/monitor are you using?
    - what else is open on your mac?
    - are you running any kind of VNC setup?
Also, can you give us a few more details about the type of composition you're running? Such as:
  • - what else are you using besides DVX media?
    - how many clips per deck?
    - size of the comp?
    - how many layers?

Yes one gpu is connected to all my outs and the other does other calculations. The way the cards work together.
I'm running 4.1.11
I'm coming out thunderbolt to hdmi to a decimator HD-MX
Nothing
No

I'm running JPEG Photos sometimes in the deck
14 clips in one deck no other decks
Comp is 1280x720
2 layers

One service will be 60fps and then an hour later we will do another service and the same exact clips that I ran before will be at 30fps.

I am controlling it via artnet and my audio out is on a Dante network but that is a closed network.

Do you have the option to update to Yosemite? A lot of people reported problems with Mavericks on the 2013 Mac Pro, which all disappear when they update to Yosemite.

Are there plans for 64bit and dual gpu support in the future?

Those are two simple questions with two complex answers, especially when asked in the context of this thread.

Yes, there are plans to make Resolume 64 bit. However, Resolume being 32 bit has nothing to do with the performance issue that you mention here. For the user, the only real noticeable difference of 64 bit will be that you will no longer hit a memory limit when using non-DXV encoded files. Performance increase will be negligible.

No, there are no plans to support multiple GPUs in crossfire/SLI configuration. However, 'multi GPU support' is not the problem that you're having with the Mac Pro. Resolume has supported playback through multiple GPUs since Resolume 3. A lot of people reported performance problems on Mavericks, both on the 2013 Mac Pro and the 2013 MacBookPro, and these problems all seem gone on Yosemite. Running Resolume under Windows on these machines has worked exceptionally well since the first day they shipped. We're not ruling out that it could be that we need to do something specific to optimise for Apple's new machines, but so far it's looking like it's simply driver problems on their end.

The reason we don't have plans for crossfire/SLI setups is that Resolume is more than able to do its graphical work on a single modern GPU. Crossfire/SLI setups are designed to do complex 3D imaging for medical and architectural purposes. Even when running 30 layers of HD, Resolume is not doing much more complex than texturing 30 quads. You don't need crossfire/SLI for this.

Even for multi output setups like 12+ discrete HD outputs, the main bottleneck is getting such a large texture from the harddrive to the graphic card. Once it's there, it doesn't make a difference whether you have 1 or 2 or 3 cards doing the processing. It's always going to be the texture upload that is your limiting factor. This is why support for multi-machine sync and output are more interesting for us than support for crossfire/SLI setups.

So, I installed Yosemite and my FPS will be 60 FPS and is still randomly it will drop to 30 FPS playing the same clips.
