smpte versus bpm

Post by dandelion »

Who can help me out here?

I imported a SMPTE track in ableton live, routed the output of that track to the resolume computer.
In ableton (arrangement and sessionview) I still have my midiclips triggering the videoclips in resolume, which are no longer triggered on timeline but smpte. (midi clock input in resolume switched off since smpte is my clock, right?)

how can I make these videoclips play faster/slower and still in sync with the music when bpm in ableton changes? Is that possible anyway (maybe there is some max scripting necessary to calculate the difference between original and new tempo in order to define the new smpte speed, or is that a misunderstanding of the smpte concept?)

thanks in advance!

you could try warping the smpte samples in ableton in re-pitch mode.

extra info: on every midi trigger clip in the arrangement view in ableton I placed a new SMPTE clip (in its own SMPTE track), starting at zero.
Probably (test that tomorrow) I have to use one continuing SMPTE track for my arrangement instead and use the offset in resolume to enter the correct smpte position in every resolume clip? I read some info on a vj forum about "Arena chases to timecode. so if the timecode moves back and forth or changes speed ( scratching) the content that is being played does the same, making resolume a cleverer imitation of the Pioneer DVJ"
this quote suggests time manipulation is possible.

still not able to change the videoclip speed according to tempo changes in ableton. what's wrong here?

As mentioned: I trigger my resolume clips in ableton via midi clips from one track, in another track I have my SMPTE signal running, no midi clock input in resolume.
What I expect is that a (master)tempo change in ableton affects the tempo of the SMPTE-clip ableton and so affects the tempo in the active resolume clip.
(the suggested warping in re-pitch mode didn't solve this issue). Anyone?

changing the playback speed(pitch) of the smpte clip should change the timecode speed, thus changing the video clip playback speed.
Works for me around the normal playback speed of the smpte signal 120 bpm +- 20bpm.

ok. and the pitch you are talking about is the master tempo speed, right?

I set the clip warp to re-pitch,
then adjusted the clip bpm,

changing the arrangement bpm should give the same result.

note that outside that +-20bpm resolume dropped the playback.

thanks ravensc!
I followed your instructions (repitch mode) and now I'm able to fire my columns in resolume by midi trigger, on the same time sending a smpte signal starting at 00:00:00:00 from arrangement view. Some clips are set on SMPTE, some other on BPM sync. I will test some more to see how both timeline options work together and come back to you.
