I'm a new member, so let me introduce myself: my name is Daan from Amsterdam. I would call my profession 'video designer+technician for theatre'. I do work a lot with Arena during rehearsals, and during show/tour I use Qlab, sometimes together with Arena (Syphon) because the 'Advanced Output' is always making my dreams come true

I've been surprised by a product of Club3D: Sensevision. Or you can call it 'Displaylink' technology.
Their devices enables you to output HDMI of DVI via USB3.0. Sounds amazing and impossible-ish. So I've just purchased this thing called: "SenseVision USB 3.0 Dual Display Docking Station". Really nice hub also adding a Ethernet port and some extra USB and sound. I have a Macbook Retina 2012, but as far as I saw it also does a great job on Windows (not really sure though!!!).
On the website http://www.displaylink.com you can read all about the shortcomings and problems with Yosemite etc. They're working big time to solve these problems. Anyhow the main problems are in the hands of Apple. For example: the half-transparent new interface of Yosemite looks akward and the native screen calibration does not work at all. So the colors looks a bit off. However If you're in big need of a 2nd output.. or in my case a 4th output.. it might be an option.
I'm just in the middle of a big project, so I took just 1 hour to test it. However: it seems to work fine with Resolume.
I read about no OpenGL support.. but so far I was able to run a video, and some snow effect (to test the framerate). This device takes up about 30/50% of total 800% cpu usage of my 2012 retina Mac.
Framerate is not as smooth as Native DVI/HDMI. My guess is somewhere between 30 - 45.
Unfortunately I havn't got time to test the latency. Also I havn't got the ability to test both the HDMI and DVI simultaneously. The website states it is possible.
Qlab also outputs fine.
Pro's:
- extra video output via USB3.0
- cheap (USB3.0 to HDMI just 80 euros)
Con's:
- takes up some CPU power
- no smooth framerate, not bad though.
Does anyone else have experience with this 'Displaylink' technology? Couldn't find anything about it on the forum, that's why I started a topic about it.
If some of you are really interested in me doing more tests, please ask.
