slow performance/video ram doesn't reset after clip removal

Post by dje »

Hey VJ's,

I do some pretty big shows and have been crippled by a problem that doesn't make much sense.

I use a 17" 2011 2.2GHZ i7 macbook pro running 10.7.5 and arena 4.1.1- SSD boot drive, external clip drive

After say 45 min of Vjing (primarily with DXV files, maybe the occasional PJEG) the framerate will become slow and output will not be smooth even if i remove all the clips from the comp. I usually don't have the luxury of restarting the application, so i battle for the rest of the night with minimal clip usage and what i think are jittery and bad visuals. pretty much no fun. I used to think it was a result of heavy bass on the hard drives or something that would only happen in the thick of a show, since the activity monitor would show no significant cpu usage, and the output would say 30 FPS while the output was actually jittery etc.

but the other night i ran through a media server with two machines, so i was able to restart my primary (better) machine, and lo and behold, it started up smoothly and the visuals were liquid again.

My other machine is a 2008 2.5GHZ MBP with a 512 graphics card running 10.7.3 and i basically get similar performance from it without the eventually lag in performance that happens with the better machine -(benchmark tests on both are 2 HD clips, and less than ten SD clips before dropping to less than 30fps)

anyways i've been thinking about getting a dedicated VJing PC, but its possible there's an known issue out there with this particular configuration that could help me maximize my system, or some trick to refresh the graphics card so i can do it in the middle of a show,

anyhelp or confirmation would be appreciated so that i can move forward- Thanks!

Is running 4.1.1 a typo, or are you actually running that version?

Yes, that's a typo, I am running 4.1.11, but I believe this same problem has been happening in the previous versions as well, I've always attributed it to the standard VJ dilemma of resolution/compression vs. number of layers, so i haven't kept very good track of it, just tried to work around it

now i think it may have to do with this graphics card the AMD Radeon HD 6750M 1024 MB

thanks
