Re: smpte
SMPTE is used to make sure that a pre-rendered video plays back exactly in time with other playback devices, for instance an audio track played over the PA or a lighting desk running a pre-programmed set of cues.
It's not some magical protocol that will match up a set of random visuals to whatever music happens to be playing.
Do you have a pre-rendered video that you want to match to a SMPTE source?

Re: smpte
It's not about the video, Madcrew.
In this case, SMPTE is just not a tool you need to use.
An example of when you need to use SMPTE is when you've been asked by a promoter to create graphics for a DJ intro. The promoter provides you with the audio track a week before the show, so that you can edit the graphics in After Effects to fit exactly to the audio.
On the night itself, the promoter will then play the audio over the PA and provide you with a SMPTE signal, so that the video you made will run exactly in time with the audio. This way the lighting and laser guys can also run their pre-programmed show exactly in time.
After the intro is over, the SMPTE signal is stopped and you just go back to normal VJ'ing.
If you are just starting out, practice triggering your clips in time with the music and timing your effects to coincide with certain parts of the music. That is what VJ'ing is. Even on the top shows where SMPTE is used extensively ( Hardwell, Armin, Aoki, you name it ), 75% of the show is unscripted and the VJ is simply improvising.
