Resolume Choppy on Macbook Pro 13"

Post by JTunn »

Hi guys, new member here :)

I've recently decided to turn my live performances into a more cohesive audio/visual experiences. Since programming VVVV on mac is not an option yet, I've installed the Resolume trial in order to see what I can do with video samples. The problem is that the output (I've tried both my tv and a projector) is extremely choppy and laggy, while my friends (a different laptop) runs like a dream.

I know the my 13" model isn't exactly built for such tasks, but still I'd like to know if there is any possible way I could enhance Resolume's performance. I've followed a few tutorials and have tinkered with the settings in order to optimize them for my machine, however I see no significant change. :/

I currently have 4GB RAM and a 320GB standard hard drive and am thinking of getting a new samsung SSD drive along with 8GB RAM, would that help me at all or should I just look for a new laptop?

In the output menu you can enable Show FPS so you can see the rendering performance.
Lowering the composition resolution helps to achieve better fps, but without a dedicated video card you will quickly find the limits of your laptop.

You can find good deals on retina macbook pros on ebay,
The 15" mid2012 version with the gt650m will perform very good with resolume. Get one with a big ssd and you're good to go.
There are also good windows laptops out there, like the gamer asus or msi series which you can get new for about the same price as a used macbook pro.
Software developer, Sound Engineer,
Control Your show with ”Enter” - multiple Resolume servers at once - SMPTE/MTC column launch

Short answer is your Macbook Pro 13" won't cut it and you need a laptop with a dedicated GPU. As Ravensc mentioned, the MBP 15 with the GT 650M or 750M work great with Resolume Arena but as always, it'll be more limited than a desktop unit running a bigger GPU.

One thing you can do to gain some FPS is to disable global effects & blend modes in the Video Preference but that depends on what you're using Resolume for. I use that trick all the time with very large comps but I build a lot of my media accordingly.
