mapping hundreds of polygons?

Post by dukebox »

I have made a polygonal face model I want to project onto.
I want the tips of the polygons in the video files to be mapped "perfectly" to the tips of the polygons on the actual wood model I've prepared.

Creating one Slice and using dozens of subdivisions on it seems like a very tedious and inaccurate way to do this.

I'm unable to draw multiple polygons when I add a Polygon, it ends up like this which can only help in mapping the outermost tips of the polygons.

I can draw each polygon individually like this:

It seems to work, but its slow to create (I dont see key shortcut for drawing a polygon) and is it a good way performance-wise, or is there a better way to do this I'm unaware of?

That's only 72 polygons :)

Having 72 polygons of this size is fine. You can hit CTRL-D to duplicate them. Their corner points also snap, so creating the mesh shouldn't take you more than half an hour at the most.

If you want to load the 3d model and warp its mesh directly, I think Madmapper and MWM can both do this. I'm sure there are other tools out there, maybe other users can recommend something they have hands-on experience with.

Figured I would put my money where my mouth is.

Created the input map with 72 polies, in 20 minutes.

@Joris & Dukebox: I'd love to see the input map for this project and also a movie of the end result.

@Joris: It'd be great to have some mapping presets for this type of application so that one can create all the artwork on a grid.

For instance, click a button and your input is split in multiple slices that divide the input and output equally in 4, 8, 16, 25, 36, etc.. or any subdivision that makes sense. In a sense, what I'm describing is something similar to the pixel fixture interface.

I guess 20 minutes seems extremely tedious to me because of the features of 3d modellers vs VJ programs like Resolume. It took me less than 20 minutes to prepare the actual 3d model.
I don't mean Resolume should have 3d feature (but I wouldn't mind), I mean things like Extrude, creating a triangle when clicking on a location and using the previous two clicked points and multipoint select (move several points of different polygons at the same location) as well as proportional editing would probably cut the time by 80%.

PS. It did work though and was successful.
