OSC - bypass all Layer effects command?

Post by DumbNoob »

Hello,

Using TouchOSC on iPad. Trying to create a toggle to bypass all layer effects.

Example - /activelayer/video/effect8/bypassed
This toggle bypasses the 8th effect of the active layer. I cannot figure out how to bypass all effects on active layer simultaneously.

I have tried mapping application keyboard shortcut assigning the same keystroke to all the bypass buttons of the effects in a layer. In TouchOSC Editor, I then set OSC to auto and indicate the same key as assigned in the application under the Key tab. Doesn't translate.

Any help is appreciated!

touchosc via midi should be able to do what you need, with mapping the same midi note to all of the effect bypass buttons.

Hi,

Thanks for your response. I should've mentioned I tried that too. I must be doing something wrong.

In TouchOSC Editor
• OSC tab, check Auto
• MIDI tab, Value is Enabled
• Type is set to Control Change
• I match the Channel and Note to what I've set in Arena for the same MIDI shortcut. In this case, Channel 1, Note C5
• In Avenue, I turn on Application MIDI mapping. I set Bypass of first Effect in Layer 1 to Create Note Shortcut. I do not check the Piano box.
• Activating toggle in TouchOSC yields no result in Arena.
• I have tried this also with mapping the shortcut using Controller Shortcut set in Avenue, matching numbers, etc. in the Editor with no success.

Any advice? Thanks!

the Type should be Note, not Control change I think.

Sorry, again, for the bump. I am still trying to get this to work. For kicks, I did a dummy test as follows:

Default MIDI shortcut to trigger the first clip on Layer 1 is Channel 1, C-1. In Editor, I add a push button. OSC tab set to Auto. MIDI tab, set to Value and check the Enabled box. Set Channel to 1, Type is set to Note. Note is set to C-1. Velocity set from 0 to 127. Touch the button on iPad, the 1st clip on Layer 1 does not get triggered.

MIDI Bridge is enabled, the Bridge app is running on laptop. Forget about the bypass thing I'm trying to pull off; I can't even get a default MIDI shortcut to work in the app.

Please, if anyone has any suggestions, fire away. Thank you.

To trouble shoot this, I'd run MidiMonitor to see if the midi from TouchOSC is actually arriving on your computer. If so, then you can also check what the values actually are.

Also keep in mind that using musical designation ( ie C-1 ) for midi notes is just a convention, and different softwares set their middle C on a different note. It could very well be that TouchOSC C-1 does not match Resolume's C-1.

We have a few options to change where the middle C is set, but generally once you have midi communication up and running, it's best to use midi learn to map the correct note to your buttons.

Joris, thank you so much, all great advice! Here's where I'm at now...

Yes, MIDI Monitor is showing the expected input messages in its log. Using my above dummy example, see attached image. Channel 1, note C-1. It doesn't trigger in Avenue.

• Using TouchOSC Bridge
• Avenue preferences, MIDI. TouchOSC Bridge MIDI input and MIDI output checked.
• Legacy middle C.
• Tried C-3, no different.
• Tried C-4, no different.

I'm intrigued by the MIDI learning you refer to. This might be my only hope but I can't find in the user manual how to proceed this way. Not sure if this has to do with this being a non-static device without tangible buttons/faders/knobs but that's what I'm guessing. That being the case, I would appreciate any advice for how to set up a layout in TouchOSC (with, I guess, unmapped buttons?) allowing me to do learning within Avenue.
Thanks! Please let me know if I have left any details out.

You can use midi learn by going into App Midi Map, click on a clip and then instead of assigning the shortcut yourself, you press the button in Touch OSC.

If Avenue is receiving anything ( and according to Midi Monitor, there is no reason it shouldn't ), it will now make the shortcut for you.
