Hey guys,
just wanted to share my way of controlling a OS X based media server over the network -
6 months ago I discovered that the "screen sharing" mode in OS X provides a very low latency solution to control another mac over lan with nearly no latency with a fluent framerate (about 30fps) - I instantly checked that for videos and smaller games if its possible to play over screen sharing. After some minutes I even forgot that I played over a VNC client (no lags, no sluggish performance or tearing), because it just felt "native". Of course I checked Avenue over screen sharing and I was impressed -
the preview window was fluent as f*ck, no lags - even the timing (tapping beat, click resync etc.) was great and totally usable in a live situation.
As a result, I tried that setup out at a gig and it was rock solid, no connections losses - I totally trust this setup and I would recommend everybody else to give it a try if your setup is OS X based.
So instead of carrying media server, screen, keyboard & mouse - I just need media server, lan cable and my macbook (the macbook uses less real estate on the stage as well).
If your using Windows on your media server or a mixed setup - you should give Steam In-Home streaming a try (it is developed for gaming, but screen shared gaming over network also depends a lot on low latency).
