will a vga to hdmi connection work with resolume arena 5

Hello,
I want to hook up a projector with VGA cable to my laptop (msi gs60 6qe) which has an HDMI port.
What do i need for this to work ? Will it be enough to buy just an adapter (VGA to HDMI) ? Or do i need something else.
Also i tried to hook up projector with vga to my laptop through mini display port (also used an adapter) but that didnt work with resolume arena 5 other applications like power point for example worked just fine...could you explain this to me ? Im new to this kind of thing....

Yes an HDMI to VGA should work no problems but I would get one with external power (5V from USB port).

It should work no problems. Are you sure that one the other applications wasn't still using the external VGA monitor when you tested with Arena 5?
