future mp4 and mp3 support?

I'm currently at a Festival having rendered out master HD mp4 files which I use as final format for all my work. They render nicely out of Sony Vegas, aren't huge, play back well on slow old systems through Touch Designer, Arkaos etc and compression artifacts are never a problem. I only need to play one at a time, don't need to go in reverse and do crazy stuff.. just want a playback system with a bit more flexibility than the Vegas timeline. I like Resolume but I'm not about to re-render everything out to .mov and changing the file extension doesn't always seem to work, especially for files with audio... plus it feels like a hack for second-rate VJs

Are there any plans to add support for these file formats in future? I find the lack of mp4 (and to a lesser extent mp3) support on PC the only frustrating thing about this software which I'd otherwise use extensively.

mov is just a container, you can have nice small mp4 packed into it from Vegas directly.

Just to reiterate, all you have to do is change your .mp4 extension to .mov and Resolume will accept the files as long as the codec is supported.

I just double checked and changing the file extension to .mov isn't working for me. These are files that play on every other piece of software on my system.. could it be related to audio encoding? Regardless it would be so much easier to just be able to drag them into the software without renaming, copying or re-encoding. While I understand the motives for using DXV, optimum layering etc, lack of direct mp4 support is a bit of a deal-breaker for me, which is why I'm interested to know if it's planned for a future update.

just had a thought.. I recently uninstalled quicktime (as recommended for PC these days) so I wonder if that could have something to do with the extension change not working. Interestingly the renamed files still play in VLC though.

I might be better off contacting the developers for a direct answer. Quicktime has always sucked on PC and I'm relieved it's gone to be honest, so interested to know what future plans are (if any) on the mp4 front. Joris' comment why they don't include mp4 support was from 5 years ago and I think a bit has changed since then. I agree with the more recent comments of ArcRunner and Dragonsoulj on that old thread.. many of us are using software for running shows that don't require layering 5 or more clips at once and mp4 seems to be a standard way videos are shared these days. Seems strange that it isn't directly supported.

The way things are looking now, the 'rules' will be a lot more relaxed on Res 6. We'll be finally be ditching Quicktime (or rather QTKit), which among other things gives us a lot more leeway when it comes to file format support.

We still stand by mp4 being a shitty container, and h264 being a shitty codec for anything else aside from web delivery or web playback. Also playback of these long gop compression schemes is still going to be CPU intensive and therefore abysmal compared to DXV or ProRes.

But, as it's looking now, we won't be so preachy as to outright prohibit it.

Sounds positive Joris, thanks. I think there's probably quite a few users like me for whom the convenience of using the same file for multiple purposes trumps performance issues when playing multiple videos. We're not always using the software for 'VJing' as much as multimedia installations and quick cue systems, sometimes at a day's notice or less. I look forward to a more relaxed Res 6
