I've read through several topics and haven't really found anything that fits the issue I'm having so I thought I'd ask on here (as well as email Resolume).
I have 9 layers. 5 of the layers are set to normal play and 4 layers are set to piano play (I have to specify each clip to be piano or normal, since I can't do this per layer. Is there a way to make each layer be piano or normal? This would save a lot of time in the future). I have 10 columns per deck.
On the 4 piano layers I have an auto mask FX turned on so the decks can be used for punch through designs to overlay ontop of the videos playing below it.
For global FX, i have 5 colorize fx, 5 strobe FX, and 8 other FX such as rgb delay, quad mirror, suckr, and etc. ALL FX are set to bypass be default and the FX are fired off via piano style so they won't stay active when i release the button. All clips are DXV3 files, I have 4 clips that are regen from docoptic (resolume generated content, like moving squares i use to overlay for FX), these clips are piano mode.
soooooo.... When my ram usage hits 50% the low memory warning comes on and when my memory hits 75-80% usage resolume crashes. I was wanting to see if we can figure out why this is happening?
My session has 10 Decks all with the same configuration (about 70-90 clips per deck). Output is 2 screens with 1 slice each (main and preview output) 720p
apc40mkII controller
quad core i7 processor, 6gb video card and 8gb of ram. solid state drives and windows 7.
My video memory is hitting about 500mb of the 6gb usage so the video memory is hardly being used...
i'm upgrading my memory to 32gb this week when it comes in, but 8gb should be more than enough, right!?! I rather figure out why it's using so much and what the culprit is.
The way i run the session is i keep all my fx on bypass and all my clips off when not used. i only 2 moving contents at a time and will throw up a 3d layer (piano style) for FX at a few key points here and there. I only use 2-3 FX at any given time and again, just a piano punch in fx here and there then they're bypassed.
When i stop a clip or FX i've noticed my memory doesn't reset, why is that? that clip isn't being used and the fx is recording data to process, so why doesn't my memory clear up after i bypass the fx and stop and clear the clip?
Why is my physical memory being used rather than my video memory?
what do you think the culprit is? what should i change or remove to free up ram?
When resolume starts, my memory usage is at 32% and it steadily grows about 1-2% per min. so after about 5-10 min (depending on how much stuff i do) i have to close and reopen resolume mid show so it doesn't crash, and I can control when i stop the playback (between songs). I shouldn't have to do this and I'm hoping we can figure out a solution.
Thanks guys, have a great week!
Another "Low Memory" Question
Re: Another "Low Memory" Question
It doesn't sound like you're using the DXV3 codec so that'd be a good place to start.
Re: Another "Low Memory" Question
Been using Mpeg Streamclip with DXV3 selected, quality set to high, audio disabled and resolution set to unscaled. Have been using this method for about a year on EVERYTHING I import. So unless something's off with the app, I don't see it being a codec issue? But yes, that sounds like a good place to start, I just know that isn't the case.
For hypothetical troubleshooting, If this was the case, why when the clip is cleared, isn't that removed from memory?
And only running 1 -2 clips at 720p in prores playing through 8gb of ram and a 6gb video card shouldn't cause this memory warning that quick (IMO).
Right??
What would be the next step in troubleshooting this? Having all my clips and FX off by default and clips only fired by piano should keep the system running really smoothly I would think. (especially if the memory is cleared after each clip or fx has been cleared once it's been played)
Thanks again for all the help

Re: Another "Low Memory" Question
It's possible your transcoding is not working properly but unlikely! Can you confirm that when you select a file and hit CMD+I, you see that the codec is DXD3?
What size is your comp and what other kind of media are you using?
Are you using any large stills that come from a full frame camera (21.2MP)?
Are you sure you don't have any ProRes 4444 files in your comp? These eat up memory very fast!
As a reminder, Resolume is a 32-bit software so it can only address 4GB of RAM.

Re: Another "Low Memory" Question
Looks like I had 5-6 motion jpeg A files, 4 video source gradient (internal generated graphic from resolume), and 1 h.264 but everything else was either dxv2 or dxv3 files.
I guess i assumed that version 5 was 64 bit. That's crazy its still 32bit with all this 4k resolution content floating around. Looks like that ram upgrade i'm doing is kind of pointless right now
I'm sure it's been asked, but when is a 64 bit version going to be released? version 6 maybe?
Thanks again for the help! your a boss!

Re: Another "Low Memory" Question
You're welcome! I think when all your files are set to DXV codec, your problems will disappear.
Re. 32-bit vs 64-bit, the DXV codec displaces the rendering from RAM to the GPU which is why is it so important when working with Resolume and especially as you work with larger comps and files.

10-4!! Thanks again for the help. Going to give this a try in the demo studio and see how the performance is affected.

Re: Another "Low Memory" Question
Got it figured out. Upgraded from Win7 to Win10 so I could utilize my full 32Gb of ram rather than being restricted to 16Gb (I know Resolume only utilizes 4Gb).
Disabled Windows Defender via Powershell and then noticed I was losing 6Gb of storage space on my small SSD for my OS and used WinDirStat to see that there was an ungodly large amount of space (over 50Gb) in a file used by Virtual Memory and a Hibernation file. So again in Powershell I disabled Hibernation and then went into my Windows settings and moved my Virtual Memory to a secondary HDD.
Opened up Resolume in a 720p comp and ran a ProRes 422HQ file, Resolume Generated Gradient FX Input, and H.264 file, and a DXV3 file, all running through a master FX of RGB Delay. Let that run for 30 min and my memory was idling at 9% (2806Mb). After I cleared all layers and FX, ran Resolume with nothing running, the memory was back at 7% (2586Mb). After I closed Resolume the computer was idling at 5% (1746Mb). So I'm pretty sure the memory leak was Windows related rather than Resolume. Also, I was doing this in the Resolume 5.1 B release.
I don't see myself ever running more than 1-2 ProRes Files or more than 4-5 DXV3 Files so this config should work out fine for me. (Would love to get the total use down to 6% or around 2200Mb OR get Resolume running at 64 bit so I can utilize all 32Gb of ram)
Just thought I would leave this diagnostic here for anyone in the future who might have this same problem.
Thank you to everyone who helped out. I really appreciate your time and help.
