RESOLUME 5 + ALBETON LIVE 9 MIDI SYNC ???

Post by blabberbytes »

So I'm trying to connect two computers one with Windows 8.1 and Resolume 5 and the other to OSX Yosemite / Ableton live. I want to bealbe to trigger audio and video at the same time so I'm thinking I need to MIDI sync my APC40 to accomplish this. Bother computers have an audio interface.

I was watching this tutorial and it told me to find how to do this but that link is dead.

Can some one help me out pleaze? Thanks

Sharing a Midi device between computers is not easy to do, if it's possible at all.

The usual way to approach this, is to forward Midi messages from Ableton Live to Resolume. On Mac, you can use the built-in Midi Network for this. Simply create a Network Midi session in Midi Studio (which is part of Audio/Midi Setup). This will create a virtual Midi port that you can send and receive Midi to and from. Tell Ableton Live to send Midi data to this port.

On the PC, you need the excellent rtpMidi. This is basically a Windows port of the Midi Network on OSX.

When your computers are connected to the same network, you can use rtpMidi to connect to the session running on the Mac. This will then create a virtual Midi port on your PC. In Resolume you then enable Midi input this port.

At this point, any Midi coming out from Ableton on the Mac will be sent to Resolume running on the PC.

If this all sounds like a lot of work, you can also look into the Max4Live OSC patches, that basically do the same thing via OSC without creating sessions and installing additional software.

Okay thanks for the the reply I will try that tool next time I get the chance. Would the OSC method be more reliable, less latency things like that?

Both OSC and Midi over IP use minimal amounts of data. When sent over a networked connection, stability and latency and things like that would be the same.

The only real difference is that the Max 4 Live stuff is easier to set up and does a lot of what you want out of the box. The Midi approach requires some more setting up, but is more customizable once you get it going.
