Master Playback Speed Decimal input

Post by lightbx »

Why is there no way to see in numerical form the rate at which you set the master playback speed? Trying to be friendly by posing a question, it's clear what feature I would like to see. Also curious why it is not in the layer panel yet available for every clip. Seems like such a simple tweak, but I am sure you have your reasons...

No, this is currently not possible, and yes, we're aware that you would like to see this. :D

Well thank you for noticing! As someone growing very interested in video development, things under the hood, I'm wondering if there is any kind of general explanation as to how Resolume is written / what prevents this from becoming reality.

Are you interested in the technical details of how a feature is programmed, or how the decisions are made on what features to work on?

More so technically...I leave the executive decisions to you.

Essentially, my thinking is that: if master playback / layer playback speed can be changed, it must be altering some kind of float. i.e., somewhere in the code, when you change the playback speed, it would be reflected in a numerical value. So I am curious about the build of the overall software, as in, what is going on elsewhere in the code that would prohibit a user from typing in the number rather than moving a fader.

FYI: this is not a feature I need, rather I am interested in talking theory.

Well, technically, there is no real reason. Internally, the master speed slider behaves exactly as you describe. It multiplies the speed values of the currently playing clips with a float value, and the result of that is used to determine what the next frame of each clip needs to be.

The main reason is more how we envision Resolume to be used, or "software philosophical" if you will. We develop something called Resolume VJ Software. During VJ'ing, we imagine the master speed slider to be used to temporarily ramp up the overall playback speed during a musical build-up, and then be set back to a lower value that 'feels' right with the current intensity of the music. We don't think many people are typing in specific values "oh, this part of the song feels like 2.13 time".

Of course, different people use Resolume differently, and especially in theatre, specific values for master speed and for instance also transition times can be very useful. Since technically, there is nothing holding back letting the user also enter those values as numerical input, those features will find their way into Resolume sooner or later.

Btw, I've been trying to get in touch with you, but the email address tied to your forum account doesn't seem to be working anymore. If you feel like it, could you hit me up on mail@resolume.com?
