Video layers and audio going out of sync

Post by Lazerlight »

Hi there, I have a projection mapped installation set up that has 7 layers of video that are all 15min long. I have merged an audio track with one of the layers. After a few runs through, all media starts to go more and more out of sync. I'm using resolume 4.

All videos and audio are exported according to resolume's recommended specs. They are all set to timeline and I have adjusted the length in the timeline under transport so they are all exactly the same length. The computer has high enough specs / graphic card to play all the files, and they play fine, the frame rate stays relatively high and they look and sound smooth, the only problem is the syncing.

Do you have any ideas how to fix this?
I was wondering if there is a way to trigger the entire column to play once the clips have finished, using auto pilot, so it starts them all from the beginning again at the same time... this could work.

Thanks for your help :)

I would run the installation on 8 layers (7 video and 1 audio) make sure your video tracks are video only (DXV codec) and that your audio track is .wav 16-bit 44.1Khz.

Rather than adjusting the timeline in Resolume, I would render all clips (including audio from the program such as Adobe AE to make sure they are exactly the same length and frames count.

As far as triggering the column to start everything at the same time on a loop there are several options but they will all involve a third party controller.

You could put an OSC/DMX/MIDI column trigger on a loop in a timeline on a third party controller.
You could set all your clips to timecode and use a looped SMPTE track or generator.

Or you could put all your clips in BPM Sync and calculate the amount of beats they need to play in for normal playback speed. I know it sounds silly to use BPM for something that needs to play at normal speed, but it's actually a very good workaround.

The problem is that when in timeline mode, each clip is responsible for its own playback and loop timing. This means that the first few loops, everything will be fine. After a while, being a few milliseconds late or early in triggering its own loop, a clip can start to drift in relation to its buddies.

By setting all clips to an external source of sync will make sure the playhead gets set on the same frame for all the clips. This can be an external app sending OSC or SMPTE, or Resolume's own internal BPM timer.
