The best way to record/export w/ arena 5

Hi guys,

I use "Syphon Recorder" in order to record my stuff in arena 5.

unfortunately I cannot use the record function in arena 5 itself -

it stops recording after 46 secounds

I need to have high resolution videos in order to upload to youtube.

I am not a VJ, I am a DJ and producer who visualize his music.


My problem is: when I use Syphon Recorder the recorded stuff stutters a lot.

I dont like that. The recorded video isnt as smooth as in arena 5.


please tell me what can I do to have the perfect video, as smooth as in arena 5 itself!

I want a video file in order to upload to youtube.

OBS studio can record and broadcast from syphon sources.
you'll obviously need a powerful enough computer to do the encoding real-time.
Or use a capture card with another computer.

An external recorder would probably give the ultimate results. We use Blackmagic Hyperdecks, and also Atomos recorders. These accept hdmi, sdi, or both, and can record in protea codec for stunning results. Monster file sizes though!

Why going over syphon anyway? - Just use OBS to record your second screen with your visuals directly with 60fps and moderate bitrate. Should do the job

I was going to recommend the Atomos Ninja 2 which for $295 is a great tool for recording an HDMI feed straight from your computer.

Hi, thanks for your answers. I am getting feeling for this stuff now.

Here are my syphon settings (please see attachment) maybe I can change something in the settings in order to get the recorded material more smooth? that would be awesome!

btw. when I say "stutters a lot" I mean that you can sense just a tiny little bit, that the recorded video isnt as smooth as the perfomance in arena 5 itself. But what I need is really smooth stuff, I want the listener to have a great experience w/ audio and video, both at the same time, you know.

I have a great macbook pro with 16 gb ram, intel i7 and amd radeon r9 m370x from 2016 - So it has to be possible to do it with this, am I right?

Ok guys, I switched the resolution in Arena 5 and Syphon to 1920 x 1080.

plus I selected Frame rate "fast as possible" in syphon.

It seems that this worked out very well! Video is really nice now.

generated files are really big, tho. Have to check if really the whole video is so sexy and dope, but it seems like this was the solution already thanks!

Ok I've tried a lot of settings in Syphon now. Still not satisfied at all. It seems like the record is depended on the computer's speed. means when the computer is working hard for a long time the recorded stuff is shuttering more.

Ok I will try to make it happen with syphon.

maybe you experts in video stuff can give me some advise which setting in syphon is really the best for high quality.

seems like Dimensions 1920 x 1080 (1080p) and Apple ProRes 4444 is the best. But I am not quite sure here. please help me out here.

If you can tell me whats the best settings in syphon are I will try it with those plus I restart my computer and the first thing I do is record arena with syphon. If this doesnt lead in a satisfying result I'll have to try something different.

I haven't experimented with recording directly to the same machine I'm playing clips from. Seems like a bad idea though, Yiour storage drive is already working hard throwing content into Arena, displaying it smoothly is fine (the GPU takes care of that) but recording it at the same time means a lot more work.

You may get better results saving to an external drive, just make sure it's a fast one if you're wanting to record high resolution files!

you mean I can simply use for example a external hard drive hd like my freecom 500 gb USB disk?

or do I need another computer in order to record?
