AOM changing? Slice Transform?

Post by djrummer »

Hi Everyone -
I know. I know. It's been talked about a bunch, but I still don't think I've seen a definitive answer or example.

I am longing to get out of using MadMapper as my final out. I currently use it for only two different presets -
1: Content mirrored on all 10 surfaces + 20 LED Fixtures
2: Content Spread out evenly across the surfaces and Fixtures over one 1920 composition.

I'm trying to figure out how I can have one clip hit all 10, or one be spread out, and change it on the fly.

I am sure the answer lies in Slice Transform - and/or A B fader - but I haven't quite figured out how to implement it all. Currently have 20 fixtures at 96 pixels wide spread across the composition in one AOM. and 20 fixtures each at 1920 wide on a second AOM.

What's the set up process I am looking for? Would love help.
Thank you!

You're pretty on point.
Slice transform is going to be everyone's new best friend! It's an answer to many requests (IMO).

What I would do is,
Create your screen and fixtures and place them exactly where they need to be in your output side of the Advanced Output Window.
Now go into your Input side and place slices to where you want everything mirrored at.
Once that is done, I would duplicate ALL of the slices and then just re-arrange the input side so everything is in the right place to make a full un-mirrored canvas.

I would name the mirrored slices M - (slice name), and the full slices as F - (slice name)

Now go into your composition menu in your main GUI (by default its in the bottom middle of the gui).
Add slice transform and add ALL of you slices in it.
Group the M's together , then group the F's together.
Now make a Keyboard, MIDI, DMX, or OSC shortcut to turn ALL the M's on together, and another shortcut to turn all the F's on together.
*Alternatively* You could map the same button for both the M and the F and just make either the M or the F inverted, so you can use 1 key to toggle between them both.

Now you can play your content and press those 2 keys to switch between your mappings.

This FX can be added to clips, layers, groups or composition, depending how advanced and complex you want to take it.

Hope this helped? :)

almost got it working. I accidentally duplicated the lumiverse, instead of the slices IN the existing lumiverse... but conceptually. I understand. :)

*edit.
I tried this with LEDs first - instead of video. Seems to have issues with layering Fixtures. both, in the same lumiverse, or, duplicating the lumiverse and matching settings.

Any ideas?

*switching to video mode next*

Going from your setup pic in your other thread, I would lay out my input slices like this. One drum = one slice.

If I wanted to play the smiley over everything, I'd just bypass the Slice Transform effect. actually, I'd set the Slice Transform effect to Mask, to prevent the smiley from showing on the LED strips.

I'd probably want to control the LED strips separate from the video, so I have them on a separate layer, and they sample just above and below the video slices. If you just want to flash them along with video, you could place them within the bounds of the video slice representing the drum they're on. That way, when you put video on the drum, the LED turns on automatically as well. Your call.

Thanks for the input, J.

I can't test it right now, cuz for some reason adding certain Slice Transforms crash my system.
It's driving me crazy. :) (submitted to Zoltan.)

Im still tweaking the setup. Ill get back to you asap.

Thanks!

K.

1. the live broadcast was brilliant. Thank you.2

2. I am still struggling with one thing in the AOM / slice transform / Lumiverse stuff.
When I spread the content over the entire output - its great.
When I add the Slice transform to the one set of 32LEDs that span two different universes, I get the content one each of the 'half fixtures' that I have to make, then I Really need it spread over the two.
Is there a way to do that?

You could create a dummy fixture or slice that covers the Input area of these spanning fixtures and use that dummy in the Slice Transform effect.

Which is explained in the livestream at around 55 minutes in
