How can I use symbols and emoji fonts on a mac?

I used to use the Emoji and Symbols from the input characters preference to input characters such as stars and arrows into my qtz comps within Resolume 5.
Now with R6 I cannot seem to use these symbols in the built in text generators even though they do show up in the text input field. Is there a way to make them work?

Found my own answer, just had to choose Zapf dingbats font
But they don't all work, it's confusing me.

Sounds like an OS font issue. Might try downloading a different font or two and seeing if that corrects it.
