Hi,
I have lots of short (5-20 frames) loops, using Cinepak and Midivid codecs. I'd like to play these at relatively slow speeds, 1-12 frames per second. But for some reason I'm unable to get these to loop smoothly on Resolume 2.x. Seems like it plays the first frame of the loop too fast and shows the last frame twice, resulting in uneven and disturbing motion.
Resolume 1.51 seems to loop these better - at least the playback rate is constant. However it seems like it skips the last frame altogether, not showing it at all (not absolutely sure about this, I have to do some more testing).
Problem with short loops

If you are trying to make 'perfect' seamless loops, ie ones where the last frame should join seamlessly with the first like, say, the ubiquitous spinning logo, remember that the last frame should not be the same as the first but should be the frame-just-before-the-first frame, otherwise you will get the same frame played twice.
Not sure if that's the kind of problem you mean but I've seen it done a lot where something gives a little judder at the point where it loops.
Or are you playing non-seamless loops (like something being repeated A-B-C, A-B-C, A-B-C style)? If these are stuttering then give more info on your system and compression.

Ok I made some extended testing. There seems to be a problem with Resolume losing the first frame on some formats, and also a problem with playing the first frame (or second frame in case the first is lost) faster than other frames.
I made a 5 frame test clip in premiere, each frame (400x300 pixels res.) containing nothing but the number of the frame (1-5). I then exported the sequence in three formats:
1: Cinepak AVI, 95% quality, keyframe every frame
2: Midivid AVI, 95% quality, keyframe every frame
3: Quicktime, MJPEG-A compression, 80% quality
I also made a similar sequence in After Effects but in 640x480 resolution to see if the program or resolution has any effect. This one I exported with the same settings as number 1 above.
Finally I made the same kind of 5 frame sequence in Flash MX 2004, exported it in swf format.
In Media Player, Quicktime Player and Flash player I could view all the frames 1 to 5 in these files. So the files themselves seemed to be fine.
Back to Resolume 2.2. I loaded the movies on the deck and set their frame rate to 2 frames per second. Process resolution was 400x300, 16bit. Here are my results:
Cinepak AVI: Played back only frames 2 to 5. Frame 2 was played twice as fast as other frames. On the frames slider, what Resolume labeled as frame "1" was actually frame 2, and what were labelled as "4" and "5" were both actually frame 5.
Midivid AVI: Same as above.
Quicktime MJPEG: Played back only frames 2 to 5. But unlike with AVIs, the rate was constant with each frame. On the frames slider, "1" and "2" were both actually frame 2.
Cinepak 640x480 AVI: Same as the other AVIs.
Flash: Played back all frames 1 to 5. However, frame 1 was played much faster than the other frames. Frames slider shows the correct numbers.
I also confirmed that all this happened with other frame rates (1 to 25) too.
Then Resolume 1.51:
Cinepak AVI: A strange thing happens. The first time I click on the AVI, it plays back frames 1, 3, 4, 5. After that, it only loops frames 2 to 5. On the frames slider, "1" becomes frame 2 and "4" and "5" are both frame 5. After reloading the clip, it again plays 1,3,4,5 on the first time but 2-5 after that. Frame rate is constant unlike with 2.2.
Midivid AVI: Same as above.
Quicktime: Won't work at all. Blank white screen.
Cinepak 640x480 AVI: Same as the other AVIs.
Flash: Frames 1 to 5 play back flawlessly with constant frame rate. Frames slider is correct.
I tried this both with my laptop and my desktop with identical results. Here are my systems:
Laptop HP NX7000:
Pentium-M 1.5 GHz, 512MB, 40GB
ATI Radeon Mobile 9000
WinXP SP2 (pretty fresh install)
Desktop:
Pentium 4 2.4 GHz, 1024MB, 2x160GB
ATI Radeon 9700Pro
WinXP SP2
Both versions of Resolume were evaluation versions as I'm new to the software.
Ok enough babbling, sorry for the long post. But doesn't it look like there's something strange going on in how Resolume handles frames (and does it differently in 1.51 and 2.2)?
PS A Cinepak test clip is attached.

Hi again, I made a quick test but using 100 frames instead of 5. Exported as Cinepak AVI. Tested in Resolume 2.2 and the results are similar to the 5 frame clip:
Resolume shows only frames 2 to 100. On the frame slider, "1" is actually 2 and "99" and "100" are actually both 100. Frame 2 is displayed faster than others; additionallly this time it looks like frame 100 is displayed twice (might be that I just didn't notice this with the 5 frame clip as it didn't have enough steady rhythm to compare with).

haw do i need to use a video camera with resolume.
hi i try to connect mi camera with this software a i use a usb cable but when i see the input show me that mi camera is not connected.
what sort of camera is it? did you plug it in before opening up resolume? if it is a DV cam i dont think you can use USB for streeming it, it has to be done over firewire. if its a USB webcam make sure the drivers are installed and it is working as a normal webcam, then try it in resolume.
