copyright issues

I'm shocked to see this topic revived... wow. That was well over a year ago, the starscream show. I've worked through my copyright issues by either creating my own footage (learned a lot about maya and 3ds since then) or buying stock footage. I also work as a video producer and web designer, so the stock footage is a write off.

If you really think do it (coz you know that many large companies can be very strict on legalities) you must be very careful! Personally I don’t like it coz it’s strictly forbidden..

hey stumbled across this thread and just wanted to throw our 2 cents in.

We've seen lots of other artists using commercial clips in their sets and getting away with it, even in a really high profile festival. It really just depends on an individuals approach to the art of live video.

To clarify the above comment though, we make commericals and do VFX for a living but never use them in our live set. We create all of our own material or use real time software.

sorry, i posted that *before* i performed in the name festival (just before you guys went on); you see, *before* festival, i went to your site and the video i watched was a cool commercial montage and thus i thought this was your vjing mix.

i started it again because i came across it by accident and read what i had posted and was shocked myself (ha). meaning that i don't play it safe anymore, i can't, there's too many god-damn great films out there with great cinematography, editing, etc. (directors i adore).

yet i give credit where credit is due; all my VJ mixes are listed with credentials (director/film). also, i've had people come up to me asking about the film, desiring to see it. sometimes this helps *promote* the film. http://julie.meitz.free.fr

so, i've decided to live with ulcers for the sake of mixing great films.

p.s. addictive t.v. is getting hired by the hollywood to make mix film trailers...it's just the beginning.

i think its strictly forbidden to use anything without permission, especially if you try to make money with the work of someone else.
i use myself a lot of samples, but with a lot of cutting and mixing i create something new. i think these cutting technics are a kind of new artwork and its the only way you are allowed to do this: as an artist.

exactly. at some point its not the original persons property any more because you have changed it in my eyes. just like we wouldn't attribute a painting to the creator of the paint or canvas.

i remember in school somewhere that as long as you change a pice of artwork by a certain crazy percentage...(was it 34 or 56%???) that it would be considered no long the original owner and there was a reason for the percentage too but I forgot)

but that could be argued a lot too like if you use a 5 second clip in a hour long set that clip wasent really a big part of the set, you probably mixed it in with two other clips, you probably put a effect on it, times the effects on the other things, and curated it. at that point its more like paint not like you stole it

look at the best vjs, in my opinion the guys from ninja tune, hexstatic, coldcut, scalpel, they mostly just sampling, no cool flash and motion grafics, but their shows are incredible, playing with tv stuff like an instrument.

just checked some of those guys. awasome stuff
