Athlon 64

Post by popesz »

Hi!

I am before a laptop shopping, and wanna ask if it makes any sence to buy a new Athlon 64. Will Resolume use its possibilities?

Thanks

no - very few things can use the 64 bit aspect of it - in fact there isn't even a stable version of windows 64 yet (there are good 64-bit versions of linux however). One of the few programs that you may find useful for video rendering however is avidub - they released a 64 bit version that shows huge performance increase in video rendering time over standard 32 bit. It would have to be run in windows 64 with 64 bit resolume programming as well to work (which doesn't exist). 64 bit processing invlolves all programming for all programs to be done in 64 bit. However, the architecture of an athlon 64 is superior to an athlon xp, and you will get superior performance in 32 bit mode regardless. I run an athlon 64 3200 and it works phenominally!! I still recommend athlon 64 processors for 32 bit applications. In a laptop though you're going to be facing extreme heats... Also, if you go with a p4 with HT, make sure the bios has an option to turn off the HT feature as it actually slows down resolume.
