Lots of possibilities on how files can get corrupted.
For example, modern SSDs are quite sensitive to power loss. With MLC if you want to write one of the layers, the ssd has to read all to an internal buffer then update everything in the cell. If that goes wrong because of power outage, like an unclean shutdown, you'll lose the cell data, and you can have corrupt files which you didn't even want to write to.
