Codecs other than DXV

Post by rolandmc »

Hello, I know that the DXV codec is always the most preferable with Resolume, but which one(s) are second best? Hap or ProRes? I ask because I may try to go for a quality bump upwards from DXV with ProRes and see if the machine can take it, otherwise I will revert to DXV.

Thank you.

What do you mean by quality bump? like higher color bit depth or something else? DXV is already pretty uncompressed as it gets (smoother playback), I'm just curious to what is missing that could be done better?

I asked this a few years back and I believe at that time HAP was #2 then Prores after that. (I was asking for performance playback) so if you need something else like color depth, that would be a good questions but also possibly a moot point. I have yet to run across a LED wall or beamer running anything other than 8 bit (most hdmi input's don't support the bandwidth for that at the same resolutions you are using), and if you're streaming, the compression of the protocol alone is going to kill any and all quality you have going into Resolume.

Yeah it's the color bump. And I don't think that I actually NEED it, I just want to be ready with it just in case. It's for a film shoot, so they get very touchy about quality. Thanks for the info.

HAP is very similar to DXV,
If color accuracy is more important than speed, try DXV HQ, or use prores.

DXV did the job just fine. I always use DXV HQ for this stuff, but I will have ProRes as a backup going forward just in case. Thank you for the advice.

As I'm sure you know, Prores won't playback as smooth and scrubbing probably won't give desired results. Also be sure to set your comp color depth to math the content. What is your output devices? You'll need to make sure they are also setup to use the matching color depth (if supported, if not, then all of this is probably for nothing)
