Midi Note Traffic is slow/delayed

Post by jacoblamb »

Hey Everyone, I wanted to throw this problem out there that has been reoccurring for me for the last few months to see if anyone experiences the same thing or maybe has a fix:

Technical Info:
Resolume Arena V7.17.0
Windows 11
AMD 7950X CPU
AMD Radeon RX 7900 XTX
64GB DDR5 RAM
APC40 MKII (Plugged sta

So here's the problem: Occasionally the Midi values or "traffic" as Arena calls it, gets backed up and the software is slow to process the changes in real time. For buttons, this isn't a noticeable problem. The note on/off messages process quickly because there are only two values being sent. The problem is with faders/encoders. As a practical example, I have multi-effects built on a group, and the dashboard knobs control parameters at different rates as I turn the dashboard knobs. The dashboard knob is then mapped to one of the encoders on the APC. When I turn the encoder, the traffic will occasionally bog down Arena, and the encoder values will jump to values when it finally catches up, instead of providing a smooth, real time turning of the dashboard knob in Arena. As you can imagine, this isn't the desired outcome when using an encoder for fx that are supposed to be subtle and gradual.

When I open up preferences, I can see this problem represented in the midi traffic expandable window as well. If I grab an encoder or fader and very quickly run the range of values by turning it to 100% and back, I can see all the data values come through, but they simply are not being represented in real time. I can turn the knob back and forth, but will watch and wait as the list of data values catches up to what I input. It's almost as if there is some sort of data buffer that is capping the rate of midi output messages.

It's worth noting that I have a fair amount of midi mapping going on, as I like to use all the encoders/buttons at my disposal.

Hopefully this makes sense and someone has an Idea of how to resolve it.

Thanks in advance

EDIT:

I said that this has been occurring for months, and it has, however it is not consistent. Sometimes I can power cycle the APC and that provides a temporary fix, and other times there is no change. System and Arena restarts do not seem to have any impact based on what I've seen thus far.

Hey there,
I have got the same problem.

Technical Info:
Resolume Avenue V7.17.0 and V7.17.1
Windows 10
CPU: AMD 7800X3D
GPU: ASUS TUF GeForce RTX 4090 Gaming OG OC 24GB
RAM: 64GB DDR5
Midi: APC40 MKII

I have never noticed this Problem before updating to V7.17.0.
I keep older versions of my composition and even in older versions that never showed this problem before the issue is reproduceable 100% of the time now.
I could narrow the cause down to one layer that has mask-mode enabled (one layer or all layers below does not matter) and one clip in some layer below that. As soon as I clear the mask-layer everything settles down usually very quickly (once resolume became not responding entirely).

When deleting everything from the composition except 4 Layers and 3 clips the issue still exist, though is only barely noticeable. The bigger the composition the more visible this problem becomes. Even when only the same 2 clips are playing and all other layers are playing no clips.

I just downgraded to Resolume_Avenue_7_16_0_rev_25503. Can no longer reproduce the problem on this version.
Reinstalled 7.17.1, problem is reproduceable again.

Midi-Out is affected as well. When I power up the APC40MK2 it takes nearly 10 seconds for all button LEDs to reach the correct state.
Also when running only the masked layer and one clip in a layer below that, I can make the problem disappear setting the mask mode of the layer to disabled again.

I would totally be okay with being contacted by any of the devs to provide any data/help that might help fixing this. Maybe run a build with more logging/profiling activated or screenshare - whatever helps.

I wonder if it's just for that one controller? I was using a F1 and a X1mkII all weekend with no issues.

At least it's not only the APC40 MKII. I switched to an Akai MPD232, same issue. Same connection to the masking layer being active.

Kind of weird, we're looking into it.
7.16 seems not to have the issue to this extent, you can revert to it from the bottom of our download page.

This is really interesting. I just did the same thing in my composition to confirm, and I found the same results. Toggling a layer out of mask mode, or simply clearing active clips from the layer completely solved the problem. Midi data was working as intended.

I'll likely downgrade the the latest 16.xx revision until this is resolved.

Thanks to Zoltán for looking into it and helping me troubleshoot via email.

Good news is that we found the source of the issue, and will be fixed soon.
