darken blacks and brighten whites?

Hi there,

Is there an effect with which i can, as is very easily available in photoshop for example, control and manipulate the highlights and shadows of an image?

i need to make the light areas (which are close to white) totally white, and make the dark areas (which are close to black) totaly black.

I treid using the "Levels" effect, it does an okay job BUT it creates kindof a fuzzy edge.

any other suggestions?
