I think that you mean is something like this:
That's quite easy to achieve. I would start with a gradiant on layer 1. Then a transform afterwards put the parameters a bit like the picture I included but of course you can play around with this. ... And next, for a longer trail I would add a feedback source on layer 2 and play around with that one for the trail... You can also play around with the blend modes of layer 2. If you have this, then of course, you can always add some extra effects like a glow or may be a extra transform to rotate over the Y axis to get a bit more depth and of course mirroring will work very well. good luck.
