dvd recorder sony rdr-gx210

I bought this a week ago. Everything works fine except the recording. I cant find out what 'am doing wrong.

I put in a dvd-/+ RW (it plays and record both).
I set the timer on a randomly chosen chanel
after that i turn the recorder off. Now i can see the red recoring light.
When it is time to record the program the recorder count down to zero and says write to disc (sometimes) for about 2 seconds and after that the recorder says power off and does not record anything.

can somebody help me.
