Award show

Post by Lukalumen »

I'm running an award show and I really thought Resolume would be the answer because of the awesome screen mapping capabilities.
Unfortunately the content seems to be suited for VJs, but not for pre-made videos.

I need to be able to play videos and graphics with transparencies over each other spanning over 3 screens on stage.

Is Resolume capable of somehow handling this or should I look elsewhere?

Thanks!

Hey there!
May I ask what made you think it cannot do this? Maybe it can be a bit of a curveball when you’re expecting software to come preloaded with award-show-ready content, only to find it’s more focused on empowering you to create your own visual magic. Resolume doesn’t ship with loads of ready-to-go content for specific events because it’s designed to be a highly flexible tool, ready to adapt to the creative vision of the designer or VJ in charge. Think of it as a blank canvas waiting for your masterpiece.

That said, Resolume absolutely has the tools to handle your setup and make it shine. To work with pre-made videos and transparent layers, DXV is the best format to use. It’s Resolume’s native codec and handles alpha channels beautifully. If your content isn’t already in DXV format, you can use Alley, a handy companion app included with Resolume Arena, to convert your videos quickly and easily. Once converted, you can layer your videos with transparency, blend them seamlessly, and map them across your three screens with Resolume’s Advanced Output feature.

Resolume also comes with some demo videos to help you get started, but these are mostly there to demonstrate the software’s capabilities—they aren’t meant to replace the role of a VJ or designer. The true strength of Resolume lies in giving you the power to bring your unique vision to life. Whether that’s layering graphics, playing back pre-made videos, or spanning content over multiple screens, Resolume can do it all.

If you’re open to exploring its flexibility, I think you’ll find it’s an incredibly powerful tool for live events like yours. And if you have any specific questions or need tips for getting things set up, we are here to help.

Good luck with your award show.....

Thank you for your reply!

I don't need to use any effects or content included with the software.

I'm fully making all the videos and graphics myself. I managed to map the screens and set up the project. If you could help me achieve one thing, I think it would be all I need to make it work.

I'm using Adobe Media Encoder to export videos from After Effects and Premiere. I'm happy to see that DXV 3 with alpha is available as an export format.

I'm starting a show with a sizzle video. After it's done, the next video starts filling the screen with animated bands that are supposed to cover the sizzle video gradually using an alpha channel. I can't get this to work because I don't see a way to play a video on top of a video that is already playing. Is there a way to achieve this?

I'm happy to record my screen and show what I mean if it's not clear enough.

Thanks!

Does this make sense?

Work in progress:

I don't really understand how these slots work to play layers of videos on the timeline.

I got it to work the way I want it :) I had the clips set to Alpha, but Layers were still set to Cut. Once I set them all to Alpha it's working exactly as I want it.

Love the software.

The one thing I would appreciate having is triggers to cue clips at a certain point of another clip or audio file. This would allow me to make and use my own transitions with frame-accurate timing. Now I'll have to burn transitions into the beginning/end of videos. I'm fine doing it that way for this project.
I'm guessing that's something Wire could do, but it would be good to have that option in the main interface.

Thanks!

I see you came here from YouTube!
So, as I pointed out you had to learn about transitions and blend modes.
Regarding your other queries, it's all explained in the YouTube video where you were asking all these questions.
A combination of autopilot and envelopes allows you to create intricate edits.

Yeah, I understand that, but didn't realize I needed to set it on both layers and clips to work the way I wanted.

25 years of working in video production and VFX also conditioned me expect a linear way of working, but now that I get how it's all set up in Resolume, I'm really happy and can achieve everything I needed.
Thanks
