There seems to be some residual midi mapping or something of the kind happening.
I start with a blank comp with no midi maps yet some knobs on my controller are assigned to various layers' parameters, a,v, av, t... the worst thing is that I can't get rid of them because they are not there when I go to composition or application edit midi map...
Is this a case of deleting prefs or something of the kind? where are the midi maps stored? the only file I found is contextualMidiShortcuts.xml yet the phantom mappings are composition based as they are affecting 3 different layers
midi knobs control non assigned parameters
Re: midi knobs control non assigned parameters
ok I replaced contextualMidiShortcuts.xml and it's all good except that I need to redo all my midi mappings. How did this happen?

Re: midi knobs control non assigned parameters
there are two different midi maps, one for your current composition, and one for Application midi, if you map the Application ones it will effect any new composition you make, and old ones you have already made. It is possible that you were mapping your Application midi at one point thinking it was composition midi? I personally just map application midi, all my shows use pretty much the same layout with different content so this makes it simple, i don't need to map for every composition. hope this helps!

It wasn't that. The problem was that there was an invisible midi assignment. You couldn't see it in either application or composition midi settings so you couldn't delete it yet it was there lurking in the background!
As I said, trashing the xml file resolved it.
