No, you do not need a short throw projector.
Yes, the projector seems to be your problem. It seems to be an old projector: very weak and the light bulb is most probably old in usage hours. New projectors with with new light bulbs you get you a much better result.
Also, check your mask, if you are using one, for pure black or pure transparent value.
And... I was told once that DLP projectors are better than LCD projectors for mapping, Although my guess is that both work.

The problem could be in what you're feeding the projector

If you send it a straight single image output do you still get the same result?

If the problem goes away its an issue with what you're feeding it, if it persists, it's a problem with the projector.

You could also output to a known working monitor instead of the projector to see if its a problem with the projector.

I found the problem, and it was that I have to set the projector in a distance where you dont see the black or gray color from projector, in a black room is real hard to do it speacilly if you have the projector close to a white wall , I figure myself and I notice I need to learn some tricks in order to make the human eye lie into my projections. Thank you for your help

sounds like you need a projector with a better contrast ratio. Black is the hardest color to project, don't forget....
