Clip alpha as transition

I'm new to resolume, it was on sale and I went yep - nows a good time. Which is turning out well since that one with an 8 seems to lack in basic feature (Cough) 64bit (Cough) and QLab has decided that quicktime was boring and they want to make things a challenge. Anyway, good to be here.

The short of my question is: Can I use the alpha channel of a clip to transition over a existing clip from column to column? (L - Layer, C- Column)

L1 C1 - Branding / Outside screens clip (with alpha)
L2 C1 - Old footage
Cue Go - L1 C2 using the alpha channel wipes over C1, and then the clip (via alpha channel again) wipes off to reveal L2 C2

Does this make sense?

Hi, and welcome,

So are you trying to overlay a branding over clips?
Layer 1 is the bottom layer, every next layer is blended with the calculated picture of the blended layers below, with the set blend mode.

You can set the transition type in a layer,

for ovelaying a branding over stuff, put your branding clip on one of the top layers,
you can right click in that layer on the empty columns and select ignore column trigger, so if you have the branding playing then on column trigger it will not be affected.
Ignore column trigger can be set on the layer too, but then you will have to launch the clip manually.
Select the blend mode for the branding layer, depending on the branding file I would choose Alpha or Screen. Adjust the layer opacity as needed.

you can place any clips in the layers below, mix between them and the branding will be always on top.

Oops, I got my layer numbers mixed up.

I'm trying to use a clip in column 2 to wipe over a clip in column 1 with the alpha channel, then have column 1 stop. Like how you would bring a clip in on a higher layer over a lower layer, but with columns...

i think you want this

column 1 layer 1 clip A playing
column 2 layer 1 empty clip set to ignore column trigger
column 2 layer 2 clip B plays
column 3 layer 1 clip leave empty, ignore column trigger off
column 3 layer 2 empty clip set to ignore column trigger

then launching column 1 starts clip A, launching column 2 starts clip B but leaves clip A playing, column 3 fades out clip A but leaves clip B playing.

right?

not quite, sorry that I'm not explaining it right...

So I want to transition from Column 1 Layer 1 to Column 2 Layer 1 using the alpha of C2L1, but I can't seem to get it without a fade in, or the clip in C1L1 to stop playing... I have the transition set to alpha.

Instead of using the built-in transitions on one layer, if you're using videos, try building sequences on several layers set to alpha compositing instead and use the layer router with the opacity set to timeline as described below:

• Layer 1 Column 1: Video Clip 1
  Layer 1 Column 2: set to ignore column trigger
  Layer 2 Column 2: Video Clip 2
  Layer 2 Column 3: set to ignore column trigger
  Layer 1 Column 3: Video Clip 3
  Layer 3 all columns set to black at 100%
  Layer 4 Column 1: Layer router of layer 1
  Layer 4 Column 2: Layer router of layer 1
  Layer 4 Column 3: Layer router of layer 2
  Layer 5 Column 1: nothing
  Layer 5 Column 2: Layer router of layer 2 with opacity set to go from 0 to 100 on timeline mode
  Layer 5 Column 3: Layer router of layer 1 with opacity set to go from 0 to 100 on timeline mode
  etc.....

This should do the trick.

you need to use on 2 layers for this to work, try what I wrote, with transition time set to 0.

It might be good to know what the Alpha transition actually does, because I think you may be expecting it to do something different.

When you set the transition to Alpha, Resolume will fade up the opacity / alpha of the incoming clip and fade out the opacity / alpha of the outgoing clip. It's just a basic cross dissolve.

Each transition name describes how the incoming and outgoing clip will interact. For instance when you set it to Twitch, Resolume will increasingly distort the outgoing clip and then slowly bring it back with the new clip in its place.

When set to Alpha, it's not using the actual alpha channel of the incoming clip to hide the outgoing clip, which is what I think you're expecting. This is in fact something we have been talking about in the office, but currently you'll need to use the techniques that Ravensc and Oaktown describe.
